Predicament...how do you call an AC technician to say your new air handler is making a noise, when you can't describe the noise, and it only happens every few hours or so?  Otherwise, it works fine.  Nobody is going to sit there waiting for it to make that sound...

Stacy, have fun at the dog show.  Be prepared to spend some time looking at all the goodies the vendors have for sale.  Not everything is a geat bargain but many things you won't see elsewhere.  I never come home from a dog show empty handed.

record it on your phone? Even my crummy cell has a video feature. With sound...then you can play ti back for them?

Marty, I get calls like that all the time as I work for a a/c company.  Does this noise coincide with the unit cycling off?   Does it sound like something metal hitting something or possibly vibrating?  Is it a whining noise and if it is, is it high pitched or low pitched? Does it sound like liquid gurgling or flowing?  I ask people these questions on the phone to try and narrow down the possibilities.  The bottom line is you should call them and have them come and check it out regardless of how well you can describe the noise.  If they can't find the source of the noise, keep a log of when you hear it and anything that you think might pertain to the noise.  I know this is a new unit and it's under warranty so don't let it go too long or you might not get it fixed under warranty.

ETA the newer, high efficiency units have what's called a thermostatic expansion valve that regulates the Freon and it's located inside at the evaporator coil. Some older units had them too but not all. They can make a noise when they open or close and as they regulate the amount of Freon going to the coil.  I also wanted to make sure you saw that I agree that you need to call them out so I put that in bold.  Our techs have found pieces of paper that weren't removed that flutter around and get in odd places and make noise or a screw could have come loose allowing something to move or vibrate.  A good company will come out and spend the time to try and find the source of the noise.  They will check the obvious things and then they should delve deeper if they don't find anything obvious.  Be insistent if they seem reluctant and be a pest if you have to. :)

Call them when it's making the noise and see if you can let them listen over the phone?

Ever since we had a technician come out last summer and he changed the speed of our compressor fan and replaced our coil, our A/C has this humming sound inside the house when it runs, that is more noticeable depending on where you stand.  Plus, it runs so much louder now.  I have mostly gotten used to it, but it makes the A/C run so loud that I have to turn the TV up in the living room everytime it comes on or you can't hear it!

Marty, they might be able to just tell by looking at it, what's wrong.

Gina, I have an iPhone 3G - and it does NOT make video. Drives me nutso.

LOL, Callie, at least I'll have you two sitting on my side, right? I'm up to about 10 on my side, and 140 on FH's.

Cathy, congrats on the raise.  I wouldn't have expected that either in this economy. so they must think you're doing a spectacular job.

Gina, it's possible that Lily is just genetically predisposed to being tall and slender.  Nothing wrong with that!  We should all be so lucky. Big Smile

Gorgeous here today, so kind of a bummer to hear we might be getting more rain.  Geez.  We've had enough already.  Let's get on with spring and summer.

Well, I guess I wouldn't feel too stupid to call if others do it...

Seems like it happens just before it comes on...maybe sounds like air or water swooshing.  It's not that loud and only lasts maybe 10 seconds.  Maybe I'll try changing the filters (which I have done often), and call if that doesn't help.

My little bro has a 3GS and it CAN do video. Apparently the extra "S" stands for "video".

well heck -- I'll have to call Flora, Fauna & Merriweather and the other pixie god-mothers, and the Princeses and find out why none of them have sent you back their cards!!  I can't represent the whole Fairy Godmother Regiment alone now can I???? (realizing that you actually *have* a REAL Godmother sheesh)

for all the times I complain about the beast I should mention that there are other times his temperament is awesome.  The stone workers are now cutting stone with some monstrous tool, and there are about 6 of them out there and he is just sitting there listening. He is being so easy with all this, makes me happy!

Marty after our new unit was installed we have this horrible sound when the fan starts up in the morning - at least it sounds like a huge fan.  We had them out over and over and they never got it fixed.  So now every once in a while, in the mid morning it sounds like a helicopter for about 15 seconds and that is that.  weird.  However I would definitely call them out and describe the sound as best as possible

Not stupid at all.  Noises are so hard to describe.  Sorry to go on with all the a/c talk.  I rarely get a chance to talk shop on the dog forum. LOL
