"In response to these compelling stories, the Guide adopts a problem-solving approach that looks for ways to preempt wrongdoing in research, to create options for scientists faced with suspicions or evidence of irresponsible science, and to assist researchers in working through those options in a manner that reinforces the integrity of the science without risking career or friendships."

I definitely agree with the stuff about the celebrations. Yes, it's great that he's dead, but I worry too about the backlash from some of the extremists and others who were in line with him. It may not happen today or tomorrow, but it will happen, or they'll at least try. I don't think celebrating it will help that situation.

Jen, I would not let it go by unaddressed, nor would I make the corrections for her and pretend nobody will be the wiser.  It is a group project and it will affect your grade as well as your reputation.  If you can easily recognize the plagiarism, I would think that the instructor will, too.  Then it will appear as if you condoned it and you may fail, too.  I would email the group members and bcc the instructor, at the very minimum.

Did she really plagerize? Make sure you have a really good understanding of the definition first (vs paraphrasing), then I would see what your group wants to do. Going to the prof is not a bad idea but I wouldn't do it alone because you are impacting others.

Re: the bin laden thing. I look at it like all those thousands of families finally have closure. That's something to celebrate imo. I can't imagine how they felt. Most probably thought that the killer of their loved one would never be caught or brought to justice, which would be terribly hard to take.

I'm extremely proud of those navy seals that risked theirs lives yesterday to bring closure to thousands of americans. That was a seriously dangerous situation and I'm impressed that nobody got hurt and only a few died.

This does not mean that I'm not aware of the potential backlash or even the true reasons we are in this war to begin with. In fact, I don't believe our policy makers are innocent in the reasons why al queda attacked us in the first place. We are in a scary situation right now with lybia (and I'm disgusted children were killed in last weeks attacks), iraq and afghanastan. However, I would not take this day away from those families that lost family and friends in 9/11 for anything.

Thanks. I'm reading through it right now trying to decide what to do. I don't know how carefully the other group members read over what she wrote, or how well they know her. I know her English speaking abilities are not very good, and I was under the suspicion that her writing couldn't be too good either. I honestly have no clue how this woman got into this program, unless her writing sample was written by someone else. I did find some mistakes in her portions that were indicative of having been written by a foreigner, and those are the only slides which she appears to have paraphrased, and included some references on.

Yes, it is really plagiarism. I  copied and pasted the text of the slides she sent into Google. Entire strings of text came up, with the occasional word or clause removed. Other than that, it's pretty much word for word. She included some citations, but not on every slide. She also didn't include any references for the citations she did include.

This is pretty hairy Jen. I find cheating/stealing so incredibly repugnant. One's own integrity is really all you have in life that is solely YOURS...I can't imagine having to deal with this. I know you'll do what's called for and do it right.

    That is true too.

This will probably eventually be one of those topics that is discussed endlessly in a philosophy class at some point.  So many points of view to take into consideration.

Jen, about the plagiarism, I would talk to (email) the rest of the group first, and hopefully they agree that the professor needs to know, and you can approach the instructor w/ the backing of your group.

I agree with Julie right down the line -- I think we individually have to moderate how WE react, but we also have to realize that where we, on one hand, encourage the "winning at all costs" attitude in sports and everything else, that a lot of people just aren't going to react the same way.  They 'win' they want to celebrate.  I think it's unfortuante, but that's very much how America is right now.

Me?  I cried.  I cried remembering 9/11, and all the lives lost then, and all the lives lost since.  I cried because our lives are so very different now than they were -- not better, just "different".  Not necessarilyl more effective -- just ****different****.

But I think we also need to be mindful of the fact that this man and his followers have a belief system that values human life so little that we honestly can't even understand them.

There can be nothing cut and dried here.  And I, for one, am glad Obama waited to speak last night until they had carefully thought out what TO say and until everything had been verified.  I just wish the "talking heads" had simply kept silent and waited until there WAS something substantive to report.

Its bittersweet. Its closure for those families affected by 9/11. Its closure for every American. But its also a bit freightening to think of what may be being plotted right now.

Today is a bad day. Super busy at work, I slept like garbage and am so not feeling this whole work thing! Statement day on top of it. Better get back at it.

Hope everyone has a good Monday.

FH's lawyer just called.  His divorce was supposed to be final on thursday.  The judge is denying it.  Apparently when she was served it was w/ 2 affidavits and in our county (or something local) you can't do that.  They have to be separated by 20 days.  So even though she signed saying that she wasn't contesting anything and that she wasn't going for alimony, the process has to start over.  Which means that there is not a wedding happening this month.

Wow, Steph.  I'm so sorry that once again the divorce isn't final.  (((hugs)))

(((Steph))) I'm sorry that mess can't be done and over with already.

(((Steph))) I'm sorry -- but honestly?  FAR better that the judge stop it now than her having a palce to put her foot in the door and open it all back up again.  I don't mean that to sound callous -- but "ex's"  in general can wreck havoc and when this is final you want it O-V-E-R!!!!  **COMPLETELY** OVER.

FH's attorney *should* have caught this -- I would give him a hard time about it because that's more money everyone has to pay.  I'd make sure he justified that.

(((Steph))) - I'm so sorry. What a mess this has been for all of you.

I agree with everything Julie said in terms of the Osama news.

I have a terrible case of spring fever. My boss and 2 coworkers called in sick today and my 2nd in command boss took the day off to go hiking. It's going to be 80ish today and for the rest of the week - woohoo!!!
