A new addition

    A new addition

I think we've rescued another critter. It's my wife's fault, again.

A little history. We got Shadow from the girlfriend of our friend's son. My wife brought me the young lady's cell phone with Shadow's pic and how could you resist his face? Ya'll know the rest of that story. At the time, I had an old cat and they got along fairly well. Her kidneys failed at almost 17 years of age, so it was time for her final rest.

The lady who used to own the lab that she wanted to breed with Shadow, (no, we didn't, for all the right reasons that we know, here) has had a stray kitty hanging around her house. Her regular cat will not tolerate this little one in the house. So, she, who works with my wife at her second part time job, thought of my wife as a perfect choice, provided Shadow wouldn't eat this little kitty. So, on our daily walk, I chose one of our regular routes that goes by their house. And things seem to go well. So, we brought this kitty home. And Shadow hasn't eaten her, yet. He grew up with a tomcat. He got along with my cantankerous old Misty. The neighbors behind us let their cats out and one of them jumps the fence and plays with Shadow.

From work today, I called my wife, who didn't go in to work until later, and asked how things were going. She said, at one point, they were laying on the floor with their heads together. Another time, the cat was in her lap and Shadow was laying on the floor while she emailed recipes to another friend. And she's kicking herself in the butt for not having had a camera ready to take a pick and sorely wished that I had been there to see it. We weren't sure last night how things were going to work out. Shadow plays hard because he thinks he's still a puppy. So far, so good. We don't know if it will work out. Sherman Animal Shelter will take her but it costs you $40 if you don't live in Sherman, which we don't. And after 7 days, they euthanize.

She is pure white, short to medium length fur, dotted with grease from the car she was living under, and jade green eyes, and a pink nose. 4 to 5 months old. She's been treated for fleas and ear mites but has not yet had her first shots. If we can keep her, then she will get her shots not long after Shadow gets his booster. Then, a month or so later, whenever the vet thinks so, we will have her spayed.

The friend who gave her to us said we can bring her back if it doesn't work out and she'll find someone else. She just thought of us old softies, first. The poor thing was emaciated to the point of collapse but a few days of food have turned her around.

This should prove interesting. At first, I thought Shadow might be defensive or jealous but so far no, he just wants to play and run. She may prove to be his match, yet, at the sacrifice of our humble decor.

I think this bodes well . . . you might be giving this little girl with jade eyes a home and a really big brother.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed it works out!

That is great, you guys are doing a great thing. Sounds like Shadow is enjoying the addition. Keeping our paws crossed that it all works out. (Of course we will have to see pictures!!) [:D]

BTW, the little daughters of the lady who found her have already named her. Chi (pronounced chee).

I'm still working on a roll in my regular camera and I just bought the wrong batteries for my cheapie digital. I'm working on it, though. By the time I get a good pic of her, we'll have her cleaned up to her imminent snowiness. I mean her fur is pure snow white, disregarding the grease spots from a '94 New Yorker. Today, with their good behavior, was a good sign. I wasn't in the "market" so to speak, to take on another pet. But she stands about as much or better chance with us than she would at the shelter. Either she and Shadow will get along, or they won't. If they do, then he has an aloof pack mate, and he is a social animal. No, we won't become collectors. When the friend mentioned that the shelter PTS after 7 days, I said, "And there's a reason for that." There are finite limits to any resources. And there are more pets than there are suitable families to take them. Notice, I said suitable. In some cases, as hard as it is, that means that PTS is better than the alternative. That means that the beautiful Sibes I saw at the shelter in April have either been adopted (doubtful) or they went to the bridge the next week. I think one of them stood a chance because one of the volunteers is from Alaska and she used to work at a sled dog kennel handling up to 80 dogs and she was loving on this one docile male Sibe while we were talking.

Hope everything works out so we can see some pics soon.

She sounds very pretty!  Hope it goes well and Shadow has a new playmate!

Okay, I'm trying really hard not to think about those huskies at the pound and concentrate on....

....a black dog and a white cat? It was meant to be, obviously! [:D]

Yes, I thought about that, too. The predominance of Shadow's colors are dark. Black, Brown, Red. White accents and a thick white undercoat in winter. Against her pure white. I gave her a bath last night. What I thought was grease on the tips of her ears may be pigmentation, instead. She likes the hair dryer.

    edited to add:
We're possibly thinking of changing her name to Jade.

Until I get new pics, here's Shadow playing with the neighbors calico that jumps over the fence.

I think it's a great idea to keep her - and Jade is a much better name!

When my heart cat Charlie died, I didn't look for another cat.  I knew when the time was right, there would be a cat that needed a home as much as I needed a cat.  It was five months before she showed up, but it turned out well.  She got along great with Shari. She's been with me for five years, now.

Ron, good for you!!!  It sounds like Jade has found the perfect home!

She sounds great and I bet Shadow is excited to have a new pack-mate.  Good luck with Jade.

Thanks, all ya'all. My wife has decided her name will be Chi-Jade. We can call her either. I think, after a while, Jade will be the name of choice. This morning, as my wife was unsuccessfully trying to sleep in a little bit, she called to me. So, I grabbed the regular camera first. I've got two pics of them laying on the bed together. The problem with my digital camera is that it has no flash and I have to have a lot of natural light. So, we'll have to wait until I finish this roll, which started out with 24 exposures. I guess I'll just have to take a bunch of pics so I can develope it.
