What kind of dog could this be?

Sorry - I don't have pictures, but when I was at the vets this week a woman came in with a dog that looked like a german sheppard, but the dog was totally white and twice the size of any sheppard I've ever seen.  The dogs back was at her hip height and I would guess the dog weighed 125+ lbs, his ears were totally erect and he had the coat texture of a sheppard.  His name was Stetson and he was one of the most beautiful dogs I've ever seen.  I couldn't get close enough to talk to her (she was keeping him on a tight rein and Sassy doesn't always greet politely).  Any ideas?  I checked the AKC website and couldn't find anything like it.

    most likely a White Shepherd
or even could have been a husky mix. A woman that lives near me has a husky mix that I would swear is a White Shepherd till I get up close enough to see his coat and one blue eye. And she told me his is a husky/White Shepherd mix. Beautiful dog - all pure white, very tall.

White german shepherds from what Ive read are often called "big boned white german shepherds"... are generally a good bit bigger than the regular GSD.  I dunno its all I could think of.

I really need to type faster[8D]

My first thought was Great Dane, though I could certainly be wrong. Male Huskies don't hardly ever get over 60 pounds. GSDs, I think, can range up to 90. So, maybe Amy is right.

The top of the range of the breed standard for GSD's is 90 lbs.  Unfortunately some breeders are going for giant sized shepherds and likely ruining the line.  As far as I know, white german shepherds follow the same size standards.  I have a white, and she's almost delicate looking compared to the boys.

Sassy weighs 73 lbs and this dog was at least 1/2 again her size.  She did look just like the white sheppard pics though.  Honestly, the most amazing dog I've ever seen.  I sure would hate to have to feed it though.

She could have been a Shiloh Shepherd.  They are bred to be a bit larger than GSDs.  I've seen males at the 125lb range.  They also have more of a square set up than the GSDs.

Could it have been a white malamute?  Some malamutes have coats the same length of shepherds and the size sounds about right.

well i guess it could have been a white shepherd..but 125lbs is not normal, a shepherd shouldnt be that big...like glenmar said, a white shepherd should be the same size..Akbash dog was the first thing to pop into my mind at first but most dont have cropprd ears, although Akbash dogs in Turkey and Turkish imports are sometimes cropped.

Why don't you call your vet and ask?

Tail wasn't curled at all like a malamute or husky and fur wasn't soft looking but more like a short haired sheppard.  I end up at the vet a lot unfortunately, so I'll ask when I'm in there next.  I have no doubt they'll know who I'm talking about.

    Er...its ShepHERD not Sheppard.

And chances are you saw an overgrown w hite.  GOOD breeders of GSDs (White AND colored) Breed dogs that are 22-26 inches (give or take an inch of course) and weigh 70-90 pounds (sometimes a little more, but not much)

I'm willing to bet a little money that you're right.

Believer it or not, Mals don't always have their tail curled over their back [:D]. I can tell whether or not Maddi is completely comfortable with a situation by whether or not her tail is curled. Their top coat is also on the coarser side, like a GSD.

Here's a white Mal (from dogbreedinfo)

125lb is also not within the Malamute standard... but, alas, too many people are breeding "giant" malamutes.. .some even close to 200lb. I do not believe it's either good for them, or that they would be able to as good a sled dog as those between 70lb and 100lb (100lb is still a BIG mal).
