    Skin on paw peeling

Hi, yesterday I just found that the skin on my pomeranian's paw is peeling.  In the 4 years that I've had him I've never seen this happen.  There hasn't been any changes in diet, activity, or in the environment, so I have no clue what is causing this.

The skin is only peeling on the big meaty pad, not the individual "finger" pads, and only on his front paws.  It's almost like when we don't lotion our skin and it peels.  The skin underneath feels soft, kind of like a puppy's paw.  I've clipped off some of the skin that was hanging off so he won't rip it on something.  He's still walking normally, but I've kept his walks short to avoid hurting his new pads.

My question is, is this normal?  Should I apply vaseline or something to his paws?  Thanks.

    No this is not normal.

There is no home remidie to quickly fix this. TAKE YOUR PUP TO A VET! Sorry If I yell but searously the vet is the only person who can treat your dog for whatever is going on. It could be as simple as somehing he steped on and pealed his skin or can be more serious like a nutrition defecieny. He might need some meds so it doesn't get infected or worsen. Dogs don't normaly show you when they are in pain so it's a good idea even if you think he's not in pain to have a vet look at him.

My liitle guy who (supposedly) has pomeranian in him, scrapped off a layer of skin on his pad the other day. Could this be what happened to your dog? Within 2 days the little piece of skin fell off, there was never any blood, and it has since toughened up and he is fine. We used antiseptic cream to keep the area clean.

I've seen rough/peelish skin on the bottom of dogs' feet lots of time. Dry weather, lots of walking on concrete...I wouldn't fuss over it. It will heal and be just fine.

I'd say use your judgement, put some neosporin on it and see how it goes. If its super peely then I'd say see the vet. Does he mess with it? If so thats a sign of discomfort. Could it be a burn from the summer concrete?

No, he doesn't mind it at all.  I checked again today.  His paws look better.  The skin isn't continuously peeling, just that one layer.  And the new pads are already starting to toughen up.  I hope it's nothing too serious... I'll let nature deal with it for now.  But if it's still peeling like next week i'll get him to the vet's.

Minty Pups, use some Bag Balm on his pads. That will help the healing and keep an eye on it too. If it does get worse, take him to your vet for an evaluation.

Hey Fourpaws...i use a type of balm on my huskies pads too...mine is called "mushers Secret"but its probably the same thing...keeps the pads suple...i also have booties for my girl when she runs...

one of the funniest things is to see your dog wear booties for the first time...its not how they look, but how they walk around till they get used to them..lol

I had one that would pick up her paws so high when she walked, she looked like a spider walking. Cracked up laughing at her. Needless to say she doesn't need them since we don't have snow here in Florida. lol
