    Best no chew spray

One of my basenjis is a big time chewer.  Inside he's pretty decent about chewing on his toys, but outside he's a maniac.  He likes to chew and destroy the hoses to our air conditioner (not nice since its summer in Phoenix), the irrigation and his new favorite is the natural gas line to our grill.  Of course we try and keep an eye on him and not let him, but he seems to win quite often.  We've tried a product we found at Petco called Bitter End.  It didn't really do much.  He avoided the air conditioner for 2 days, but eventually decided it didn't taste bad enough to keep him from his favorite chew toy (yes we have been reapplying it).  Is there a product out there that you've had success with voracious chewers?  Please, we would love to know that our ac isn't going to turn off on us because there's a new leak in the hose...plus we're very concerned now that he discovered the joy of chewing the natural gas line.

Unfortunately, I don't have much hope to offer.  When we rescued our lab, Sassy, she was about 2 y.o. and chewed on everything, including the air conditioning insulating cover and everything else.  We used Bitter Apple and it would help very briefly, but eventually she got used to it and/or found something else.  We put barriers (chairs, buckets of water, etc.) to prevent her from getting to the dangerous stuff and kept a very close eye on her when she was outside.  She outgrew it and doesn't chew a thing now, so hopefully that'll be the case for you too.

I got a can of something at Pet-Co called "Indoor/Outdoor No" to keep Max away from the Christmas tree the first year we had him.  It seemed to do a pretty good job and Max was under a year old, so he was still pretty much into chewing everything he could get in his mouth.[:D] If it works for you, you could also use it outside.

My BCs think that anti-chew sprays are condiments.  [:D]

There's some products that they make for horses - look for "anti-cribbing" that are much more intense and may work for anything outside - but don't use them around kids.

Tea tree oil is the best deterrant I've ever seen for self-mutilation and keeping them off bandages and whatnot.

    Vicks Vapour Rub.
It won't hurt pup but he wont chew anything with it on either.

I've always been told biter apple is the way to go with that kind of spray. I do however, do not think it solves the underlying behavoral problem.

How do you teach your dog what is it's proper toys to play with and what are off limit? Most people only acknologe ther dog when they are playing with something they don't want them to play with. You need le your dog know what toys are his. You decide when to start playing with his toys and you decide when to stop. Give your dogs some toy and only let him play with the toys out of your hand. All other toys are off limit unless they come from your hand. eventuly your dog should only play with his toys and nothing else. Prase your dog for playing with his toy, play games with his toy. Belive me, I've lost quite a few shoes untill I figured out my dog didn't know the difference betweed toys and not toys.

Some dogs never outgrow chew toys, my 5 year old still has to have something in her mouth most of the time but she better have her toy in there and not my shoe.

I just say, "eh, eh" if they touch something that's mine.  For a while (I'm going through this with the furry elephant baby known as Rocky) I'm saying "eh, eh" every couple minutes.  But it's kind of like a game to him (like "green light/red light") so we end up with a quite good relationship and a very valuable tool for later when "Eh, eh" means, "Don't bite that sheep!" [:D]

After a few days he'll start generalizing - something about the smell I guess.  It works, I've never had a problem with the dogs messing with my things since the infamous Destructo Pup known as Maggie, who was my first dog and didn't get the benefit of my current experience.  She loves me still, anyway, I think . . .[;)]

Chew guard spray is the best I've found.  The first time I bought it at the Vet's office then did my internet research and found it cheaper.
