    Lawn and garden help

    Besides keeping them on a tie out is there anything I can do to keep my dogs off the newly planted grass seed and hastas that I put in my yard?  Is there some kind of covering I can use that might deter the dogs away from it, while still getting the stuff to grow?  I tried burlap but the dogs still go for that area and they know theres good stuff (mud) underneath it.

    Thanks

    Chickenwire laid out on the ground you are trying to protect will keep them from diggingand rolling on it. But if you have plants that can get crushed, that doesn't work so well.

    I don't have any suggestions about the lawn, but all the plants can be put in huge pots.  Pots are pretty good for keeping the *diggers* away;

    Sounds like you might have to temporarily fence off those areas. If the plants don't get the chance to establish properly- they stand no chance against the dogs!! There is that orange plastic mesh fencing, and there is lightweight mesh deer fencing that might be cheap but effective choices. Good luck!

    I haven't actually tried this and so I'm not really sure of its effectiveness, but I have heard that dogs won't dig where they go to the bathroom.  So if you don't want them to dig somewhere you place their poop in that spot.  Not sure if that would even be good for the plants, I mean it's manure, but . . .

    I bought some of that stuff at Home Despot a few years ago that you sprinkle to keep animals away.

    It works, but it smells SO HORRIBLE that it worked on me, too.

    I'd say use some kind of physical barrier. Cinderblocks and boards, chicken wire, etc.

    I will look into the stuff at Home Depot (I work there part time) but for now I really made all the dogs mad at me.  I had a cable tie out from before we got the fence, so I started using that for Shakespeare.  I picked up some lightweight chain at work tonight for Sophia.  Now my dogs best friend next door is whining at me too because he cant get to my dogs (with Sophias other current issue thats another good reason to keep them apart)

    We have a 6 foot semi private fence all around our yard.  It was great when we just had Shakespeare, but Sophia is able to squeeze through, so I already chicken wired the bottom of the fence so she cant get through.  The Hastas are along the fence line, and I know from having kids around that Hastas are nearly indestructable once they are fully going.

    The lawn has never been a problem, but to keep him out of the flower beds, plants, etc. what I do is this. Get a fairly large can, a coffee can works great, make sure it has a lid, get two or three mousetraps, don't worry you're not actually aiming for the dogs. Tie a piece of string to the release of one of the traps and thread that thru a hole in the lid of the can, VERY carefuly (I snapped myself twice in this part) arm all your traps and put them inside of the can, close the can and lay it close to where you want to keep them out of but not visible. Put your string so that IF they tresspass or grab whatever you're trying to keep them away from they'll set off the traps. What happens is that the traps make a pretty loud noise that startless them, I did this with the couch pillows and it took two re-loads, he's never even sniffed the pillows since.

    I forgot to mention, this is pretty muc ha permanent solution, if you're looking for something temporary...disregard.

    I just got back from checking into something to sprinkle over the areas I dont want the dogs.  Critter Ridder I think it was called.  Anyway I took a smell of it and it smelled just like black pepper and (obviously) the main ingredient was black pepper oil.  I didnt get it because it says use on dry areas and I just got done running the sprinkler for too long.

    hi,
    i bought something called "ropel" at a hardware store and it seemed to help keep animals from browsing on my plants and seedlings and black pipe at my cottage.
