Inside was a little card talking about the needs and characteristics of the Siberian Husky and that much careful thought should be taken before you just go and buy one "because they are cute" or because you liked the movie. I thought that was fairly responsible of the publishers.

I have seen the movie, it was pretty good, not super, but pretty good. That's great that they put the insert in the DVD. I wish they had done something like that when the Dalmatian movies came out [:@] I can't remember how many calls I got for Dal puppies and I am not even a breeder! I was just listed in our kennel club as a Dal owner. [8|]

I thought it was a good movie, I didnt go see it at the movies because I knew I would cry and didnt want to hear some kids going "Look mommy that big man is crying." One of the Malamutes, Shadow looks almost just like Tank, so I knew I was going to cry. I laughed at the comment about the 2 Mal's as "All brawn and no brain" but I dont think Tank thought it was funny, he got up and left the room (I'm not kidding, he really did).

my wife and i watched it on video a week or so ago. we didnt really like the movie. the plot was thin. i am agree with pumaward, i  thought it was more about jerry and kate's relationship and what a wonderful guy jerry was. than about how triumphant the dogs were in surviving so long on their own.

i was really hoping it would be a good movie.

That's cool. Everyone has a different opinion. I just started the thread for those who had liked to movie or wanted to see it.

Ron, I will say that I have never been able to figure out the Navy rank structure. Why they can't do it like everyone else, I have no idea. I mean, does a lieutenant out rank a captain? And wtf is all this JG bullspit? Is a petty officer a NCO or an officer

Captain is the highest rank on the ship. Even an admiral, unless he is assuming command, lets the captain run the ship. Next rank down is XO, executive officer. Under that are lieutenants. P O 3, 2,  and 1 are non-com ranks and so is cpo (chief petty officer). Master CPO is similar to master seargent. In "A Few Good Men" DeNiro is Master CPO Billy Sunday. In there, the rank structure is accurate and the whole movie is quite accurate. It was based on the historical event of the one of the first black men in what became the SEALs and one of the first black men to attain Master CPO.

For what it is worth, you will never see a SEAL salute a superior officer. This is a condition of combat training. You do not salute a superior officer because you give away their rank and paint a bull's eye on them for the enemy.

I am just proud that I went to see it!  I do not do well with animal movies, as I can't stand it when they die or get hurt, and they always seem to.  The beginning of the Horse Whisperer was majorly tramatic for me, and I will not see Old Yeller or Where the Red Fern Grows.  I went to a spoiler thread on here on purpose to make sure they didn't all die or something.  I'm glad I sucked it up and went to see it.

I thought it was a good movie, too. As I said, inaccuracies will happen in any movie, even this one. It's not "Howard's End" or "Remains of the Day" and I didn't expect it to be. I expected it to be what it was. A Disney tear-jerker displaying some of the best of a breed I adore about an actual historical event. Some of the plot was necessary. Jerry did need to go through some soul searching and find a way out of his ethical quandry.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but do plan to buy it soon. When the movie went to theatres around here a woman from a Malamute rescue arranged with the biggest theatre to bring her dogs in to show people they are not all fun and games like movies portray. She also had pictures of destroyed furniture, broken fences, etc. to give people an idea of the high energy and work that can go into owning a dog like that.

As bad as Miss Gracie is acting lately, she can be the poster child for bad husky mixes!

Next rank down is XO, executive officer.

A little bit of a correction.  In the Army, and I am virtually certain it is the same in the Navy, XO is a position, not a rank.  The XO, at the batallion level, usually has the rank of Major.  The division XO is usually has the rank of LTC.

In "A Few Good Men" DeNiro is Master CPO Billy Sunday.

Ron, I believe you are talking about "Men Of Honor".  "A Few Good Men" is the movie with Tom Cruise and Jack Nicholson...you can't handle the truth!  The Cruise character is now a personal injury lawyer here locally, he uses references to the movie in his ads.

Am I the only one who is bugged by the title of "GI Jane?"  I realize that the acronym "GI" is sometimes used for members of all the services...but within the military itself, the term GI usually refers to Army personnel.  I've never met any Navy personnel that would refer to themselves as "GIs", especially a SEAL.  So why call her GI Jane?  Why not Sally SEAL or Francis Frog?

Billy, I agree with you on the Navy rank.  I worked as a civilian for the Navy after I got out of the Army and while I was still in the Army National Guard.  Talk about being in a state of confusion for the first couple of years, especially with the officers since the insignia is the same.  Here is the Navy rank structure:

Enlisted:  E1=Seaman Recruit, E2=Seaman Apprentice, E3=Seaman, E4=Petty Officer (PO) Third Class, E5=PO Second Class, E6=PO First Class, E7=Chief PO, E8=Senior Chief PO, E9=Master Chief/Command Master Chief.  *As with the Army, E4 and above are non coms.

Officer:  01=Ensign, O2=Lieutenant JG (Junior Grade), O3=Lieutenant, O4=Lieutenant Commander, O5=Commander, 06=Captain, O7-O10=Admirals

You are correct that XO is a duty position in the Navy as well and the rank depends of the level of command.

i like sally SEAL. what a wonderful title that would be for a gritty military film! LOL![:D]
• Gold Top Dog
I was talking about the Navy, not the army. You stand at attention for Captain on deck and XO on deck. I'm not sure why you thought I was implying an XO in the army.

"Men Of Honor".

You are correct.

Navy personnel that would refer to themselves as "GIs", especially a SEAL. So why call her GI Jane? Why not Sally SEAL or Francis Frog?

Oh the vagaries of Hollywood. As I said, inaccuracies will happen. Most people will not catch that SEALs do not call themselves GIs. GI was short for government issue, I believe, which could mean any military. Maybe GI Jane scanned better than Sally SEAL.

No one, as yet, has caught the major flaw in SEAL tactics in "Tears of the Sun." I may have to spill the beans. It's a more important flaw to me than a mushing team with Mals in it, but then, that's me.

I'm not sure why you thought I was implying an XO in the army.

Ron, I'm not sure if you were talking to Billy or me, but we were both saying the same thing.  An XO (Executive Officer) in both the Army and the Navy is a duty position, not a rank.  An XO is second-in-command of their respective commands, but it is a duty position nonetheless, just like Supply Officer, Weapons Officer, etc. are all duty positions and their actual ranks vary depending on the level of command.  For instance, in the Navy an XO of a ship would be a high ranking officer, probably a Commander (O5) whereas an XO at a lower level of command, (such as a squadron) could be a Lieutenant (03).

"Tears Of The Sun" sounds really familiar to me, but I can't quite put my finger on which movie it was.
