Building a fence.

    Building a fence.

Does anyone have any advice?  I do not own my house.  I rent and the landlords are ok with me building one.  I've priced out lumber for a 6 foot wood fence.  So far the lowest price is $700 for the footage I need.  That does not include hardware for doors etc.  It does include nails.  I have been looking around at other peoples fences and have seen a few chainlink fences that look pretty good.  I always thought they were ugly but when done properly they are actually pretty nice.  So does anyone know which is less expensive.  A chain link would not be as high but my dogs won't be out there alone so I think they would be ok with a 5 foot fence.

Huskymom, I've seen some chainlink fences that look really great - you can always plant something that will climb along the fence.  And if you want privacy on one or more sides, they have these things I've seen in catalogs that just weave through the holes and make it look solid.

You may want to get an estimate for invisible fence. If invisible fence is about the same or less for the equipment and installation it maybe worth doing. The pro to this would be the wire is invisible and if you ever move out you own the equipment and collars.
Just a thought don't know the set-up or anything.

Dogluvr, I thought about an invisible fence but I have friends that come over with their dogs and if there was an invisible fence all thier dogs would need collars too.  But thanks for the links.

Advice: make sure you have lots of help if you are doing it yourself! [:D] Rent a post-hole digger on a Saturday, so you can keep it until Monday to make sure you get all your posts in.

Chain link comes in 6 foot too.. I have it in my back yard. My yard has 6 foot chain link fence around it, with those vinyl slats through it for a little privacy. You can still see through it a little bit, but I've got some seeds for some Butterfly bushes I'm going to plant next to it.

When we expanded our yard, we had a pro come in and put in the posts (which we provided) and then we hung the fence.  Much easier!! And it was not that expensive for just the posts to be installed as opposed to the whole fence.

-Just wanted to add that this was a 6' wooden privacy fence

At my old house there was a chainlink fence.  I thought it was ugly.  That's just me.  I planted ivy along the fence in hopes that it would grow up the fence & make it a living fence.  It looked cool when it had grown in.

Annie, I'm not crazy about the chain link either.. but it was free! The company who owns the property next door put it up for me when they built a store next door. [;)]

I really like the coated chain link fences, especially black.  Just looks really nice.  :)  But then again, I LOVE wrought iron stuff....  ;)

Not much advice on fencing though I like the idea of solid fencing better for privacy reasons and outside invfluence reasons.  I have dogs that bark like mad at other dogs outside so if I lived in a subdivision or neighborhood, I'd probably opt for solid fencing...

though in the last neighborhood I lived in, a neighbor had solid fencing and his dogs still barked at everything.  Even jumped into the air to try and see over..... hmmm.... but I don't think they ever did anything with the dogs except to say, "yeah we have dogs".  [:@]

We had a 3 rail split rail fence put around our front yard at our last house.  The dogs could still get through it, but I solved that by putting up that green vinyl wire (large chicken wire) fencing and stapling it to the inside of the split rail.  It looked like a split rail and then when you got up close you could see that the dogs couldn't get through it.  That might be an idea for you.

We have a 4' chain link fence.  Our dogs are NEVER out without us in the yard.  I imagine that with very little effort, they would be up and over that fence.  I would give ANYTHING to have a wood fence, but it's not in the budget this year.  If you can, I would put up a wood fence - it gives privacy and more obstruction from visual stimulants outside your yard.  (Squirrels, cats, people walking dogs, etc.)

We put up extra-privacy lattice all along the front of our yard attached to the chain link and then I planted Silver Lace Vine over it.  It's quite pretty in the summer.  It gives a little bit of a blind - so that they don't react to every person walking by.

You have to be careful with Ivy - some of it's toxic.  Honeysuckle, Silver Lace are both safe for dogs.  Clematis is NOT.  (I have a plant eater, he tried a little bit of everything.  *sigh*)

we priced a 6' wood fence and a 6' black coated chain link fence last year, and the prices were about the same on each. chain link seemed like it should be less expesive but once you add in all the hardware it really drove up the cost.

i think in the long run chainlink would be less expensive as there isnt as much upkeep with it. wood fences need to be re-coated with sealant every couple of years (maybe more depending on weather and climate), and eventually the wood will need to be replaced. chain link on the other hand is relatively maintenance free. my grandmother has had a chain link fence around her yard as long as i can remeber and it still looks the same as when i was a kid (and there has never been any maintenance done on it).

Ack!  Not honesuckle!!  Please don't plant any more honeysuckle!  lol.. We've been battling the nasty stuff since we moved in to our place.  It will climb EVERYTHING and strangle out trees.  There may be some varieties that won't do this but please be careful about it.  It takes very little for it to grow and it will grow 3 feet in a day!  Or at least that's the way it seems around our place.  Ugh, I HATE that stuff.....  [:@]

Edited to add: and don't get me started on multi-flora rose, or however it's spelled.  I have permanent scratch marks from that stuff.

You could also price out vinyl fencing to compare.  Vinyl fencing can be very pretty, easy to keep up, without the maintenance of wood fencing...
