Kudos to you guys for making it on one salary, though.  Neither of us make enough where regardless of the scrimping that we could make that work since we already live fairly frugally.  I'm terrified of daycare costs when we have kids but yet we couldn't lose one salary even if half will go directly to daycare.  Neither of our jobs cost us much in terms of dress clothes or commuting costs, etc so no extra there either.....

Thanks - yeah, although its a little untraditional that I work and DH stays home.  I always said that I would never do the daycare thing and when Riley came along it only made sense.  DH was working in the university setting and had only been in his field for about a year (we put him through college after we got married).  On the other hand, I had been in my field in the private section for about 12 years, had moved up really fast and was making enough for all of us.  Although I would give my left tata to be home everyday.

We do put some money aside to go to Mexico by ourselves and take Riley to CA to visit my parents (next month whoo hoo) so I guess it is not all black and bleak.  Just get a little pang of jealousy when everyone goes out to lunch and I am eating PB&J at my desk.  Although I know what you are talking about Nicole.  These are usually the same people who can't understand how we can afford to go to Mexico.  If you do the math and give up a little throughout the year it's really not hard (1 trip for 2 to all inclusive equals about 200 "out to lunch" meals).  Trade off is definitely worth it, but the routine gets old.

Gina - everytime I think about blowing off our retirement savings account or cutting it short one week I think about my parents.  At 65 they retired and now spend 3 wonderful months in Palm Springs, CA playing golf, laying by the pool, shopping, etc.  They are living the high life which they greatly deserve!  We would love to move out there but there is no way we could afford it at all.  Housing and honestly taxes here are really cheap (for now).  Although the recession killed Detroit, the ones that made it out alive will be better in the end I hope.

Yes exactly. My Mom struggles with her property taxes EVERY YEAR. and EVERY YEAR we tell her..."just put aside x dollars every month and even if it's not ALL there it's MOSTLY there and you are ahead come Jan" seriously with my sister living there, there are two full time employed adults in that house and it should NOT be an issue. But all she says is "I know but I really need my money every month so I just can't do that!", but they go to movies every weekend!! This year they put off Xmas for the year...but then I go over and my sis bought my Mom an exercise machine that I KNOW...cost $300. That just hurts on a personal level. I get immensely frustrated. *sigh*.

That and Belly Dancing have always held interest for me.

I did the belly dancing for 2 years then the class broke up Sad  It was great!  I had an awesome instructor and we had a great class.  I really miss it.  It has been a year and I can certainly tell the difference in my flexibility.   Sad part is that I know what to do to keep up the toning and flexibility I just dont seem to do it at home, lol.   I have always admired the strenghth of pole dancers.  Not sure I have enough upper body strength but would love to try it!  After just reading, looks like I may have missed the deadline for the classes that begin in January, darn it!  May have to wait til the next round.  Still going to call about it anyway.

It is so common for people to live beyond their means, and you totally answered your own question there, you save, and give up some of the everyday luxuries (eating out) so you can afford to take a nice trip etc.  And the cushion you are talking about, your friends probably don't have a cushion in savings at all...they just spend it all.  You however have a cushion that they don't to fall back on in hard times.  I see this all the time with my friends.  I think some of them must have boat loads of debt to live the way they do.  The only debt we have is for cars and a mortgage and it feels great!  We pass up on eating out all the time to save money.  I save so aggresively that I pretty much always feel completely broke for day to day living.  It does stress me out, but at least I know in my heart we are not broke, it is all just waiting for it's intended use.

In looking for a new house, it is easy to get swept up in location and wants, but with really strict criteria, we were going to have to take some money out of retirement to comfortably live within our means to do it.  I finally sat down with hubs last night and had a heart to hear and we are openign our search criteria up to include another area where I know we can get all the house we want for the money and has very highly rated elementary schools.  It is slightly further than where we wanted to live, but really not bad.  I feel so relieved today that we aren't going to get in over our heads b/c I was listening to him telling me that we could do this and that when he hadn't even put the pen to the paper...he leaves that up to me.

Man, my realtor is awesome.  We have a showing today and another tomorrow that she feels are both very good possibilities b/c she has spoken to the realtors, and we have an open house on Sunday.  She just called me from my house and it sweeping the porch and doing some little things to help make it look nicer on first impression.  Part of the reason we chose her is because she sells a lot of the houses in our area, but more importantly, she walks the neighborhood and puts flyers on people's doors etc.  I am really happy with her so far and will definately recommend her to friends.

ETA: I went to a party once where there was a pole dancing class.  It was SO MUCH FUN!!!!  I totally rocked the pole that night!  hahaha

You guys are depressing me today with all this money talk. I stress about money constantly. 40k in school loans, an upside down mortgage, car loan, ins, medical expenses. It all adds up to one big monkey on the back. And I rarely buy new clothes, shoes and other luxeries. I would say that what doesn't go to debt goes to food, living expenses (heat, etc) and then the dogs. Stress stress. Sometime I wish I were married just to have an extra income!

Just popping in quick this morning, good thoughts to everyone :)

My morning was early, had 8 vials of blood drawn for 13 tests and peed in a cup!

NOw we wait for results to see what is going on with me (again/now).

We were reading where you could have a "Pole party" and they would do a class.  I think it would be lots of fun.

The party I went to was for...well, let's just say pleasure toys.  :)  The pole party was part of the other party.  It was all really fun and I would highly recommend having one if you have a group of girl friends who are open minded and would have fun with it all!

Finances and pole dancing.  What an interesting chat!  lol  We could have a retirement planning party and have a pole dance lesson to lighten things up.  I bet most here would attend!  Stick out tongue

Cold, drizzly and just plain stay inside weather today.   We're supposed to warm back up to the 70's next week. :)

Lisa, you just reminded me that I was supposed to get paid today. I hate it when they don't pass out checks before I go. Sad

My paycheck is already more then spent - it's going to pay off my credit card that I just bought groceries with yesterday. And I was a bit careless with spending around the holidays. I definitely wouldn't say we live beyond our means - although we bought our house when we were both working decent-paying, full-time jobs - but I buy all the groceries/supplies and I'm living paycheck to paycheck. We have cut back in a lot of areas since I lost my job and am now only working part time. I'm trying really hard to put a little bit of money from every check into savings but it's nowhere near the "cushion" we should have.

I think horoscopes are bs. I rarely read mine, but it's always either way off or something that cay apply to just about anybody. Huh?

Just let me know where the dancing party is....will booze be served?  Please?

I just wanted to comment that when I said I know a lot of people living beyond their means, I am talking about people where both partners work and have good jobs but I still have no idea where all the money they have for all the extravagent spending comes from.  There is a big difference between that and school debt and losing jobs etc etc...it was just a general statement about some of the people in my life that I feel like are always trying to keep up with the Jones' and always appear to have a certain social status to everyone else.

The economy is so bad right now.  I really hope it turns around soon.  It is really quite scary.
