    2 Unrelated Questions

Two minor questions, unrelated but I'd love to hear what you all think -

    1. I think Russell got a bug bite on his neck (right on the white stripe) and scratched it raw. Is there anything I can put on just this one spot to either stop the itching or protect it from his nails?

    2. Those of you with adult dogs, how long do they go between their last potty break of the night and the first of the morning? We are accustomed to taking Russell out late (11pm usually) for one last pee, but lately I'm having trouble getting him to go again before I leave for work in the morning around 8am... so I'm wondering if we need to eliminate the bedtime potty break. (After 8 he's home till lunchtime with no potty access.)

I can't help with question #1, but in regards to the second question, we take Lana out for a before dinner walk at around 6-ish pm when she goes potty and she's good until her morning walk. On the weekdays, that's around 7:30 am or so.  Weekdays it can be as late at 10-11 am.

BTW, Lana will be 2 next month

    Hi,

1.- I use Benadryl cream, or Aloe Vera fresh,  when Romeo has a bug bite.  So that he does not scratch raw, I bandage his paws with self adhesive gauze or he wears his booties.

2.- Romeo's schedule: 6-7:00 am (potty break 1 & 2) at 2:PM he gets walked another hour or so and does # 1 only like a million times, 6-7:00 pm (potty break 1& 2) trip to the doggy park...10:00 pm last potty break. There have been times he skips #2 at night and he will wait until the next morning which is a full 24 hrs.  This worried me so, I talked to my vet about it and said it was perfectly fine.
I think, I would only worry if he was eating and it has been a couple of days and nothing, so far 24 hrs is the most he has gone. [:D]

My dad also takes him out to run errands a lot.

For the potty question.. Sierra is 3.5 years old now, and it varies quite a bit. Usually, her last potty break is around 9 pm, maybe 9:30. Depending on my schedule, she either goes outside at 7 am, or (if its the weekend) all the way up until 10:00.  If she needs to go out earlier she will let us know (stare at the sleeping body and whine) but she's very carefree in that sense and we just take her out whenever she may need to go.

By the way, Erin, I LOVE LOVE LOVE the pic of Russell in your Avatar.  It is just gorgeous.  Course you have a great subject.  ;)

I think my guys potty last time any where between as early as 9 pm and as late as 2am.  I go to bed between 9 and 10, and usually potty them at that point.  DH comes to bed any time after that, and he will potty whomever is willing to leave the bedroom - which is typically nobody.  ;)  We get up at 5:50 every morning, and the only one who gives me lip about peeing is Zippy, but he has pee issues.

Is he drinking enough in the evening?  That's been Zippy's problem a few times... not drinking enough later.  Maybe an ice cube or two before bed?

Thanks for your replies (and compliments [:D])!

Russell's never been a big drinker (unlike his mama, ha ha, ho ho, j/k) but since it's gotten pretty hot he's been drinking a bit more than usual. We keep his water dish filled all the time right up until bed if he wants any. I don't know, maybe he's just dilly dallying in the morning. I think we're going to just bump up the last walk until 8 or 9 rather than 11 or 12 and see if that helps.

maybe he's just dilly dallying in the morning

*nods*  I'm having that problem right now.  I forget geographically where you are, but I'm in NC.  In the mornings there is a light breeze, its balmy and quiet... and they all want to stand around and sniff.  Sniffsniffsniffsniiiiiiifffffsniff snif.... I've been having to remind them to potty from time to time, so maybe he's just feeling crunchy himself!

    1. I can't help you there, but the Benadryl cream sounds good.

    2. Roscoe goes about 8 p.m., since he has a self-imposed 8:30 bedtime.  But we generally let him decide when he needs to go out, just because he's really good about not abusing his "doorman request" privileges. (i.e., when he asks to go out, it's 'cause he really has to go out, not just for playing)  What works best for me to get him not to dilly-dally is that he doesn't get breakfast 'til after he pees.  So now he runs out, pees, and flies back into the kitchen to wait for breakfast - whether it's 7 a.m. or 10 a.m. when I get up. [:D]   I also let him just lift his leg and hold it there for a few seconds without peeing as "good enough" for breakfast. I figure he knows whether he has to go or not, and as long as he shows me that he could have if he needed to that's fine. [&:]

I take Max out for the last time of the night around 10 most of the time. On the days that I have to get up early, like at about 6:45, I have some trouble getting Max out of bed. Other days we get up between 8 and 8:30, and I don't have any issues getting Max out of bed. No matter what, he does pee right when I take him out, but he doesn't like to get out of bed early. Milile goes out for the last time around 8 usually, and gets up in the morning around 6 I think. Some mornings she goes right out and pees, and others, she refuses to go, so my mom has to come back home and take her out, or someone has to take her out later. Sometimes she'll poop then, and other times she waits till later and goes on the floor in the house, or she'll even wait until my mom gets home around 3.

Harley usually goes b/w 10 and 11 the last time at night.  On occasion he is so lazy that his last time is around 8 and he never gets up again to go out again.  I take him out again in the morning first thing and I go out with them b/c otherwise Izzy is so excited to get out of her crate that she won't go.  Harley has to be dragged out of bed in the mornings around 6:45 and he only goes b/c I stand outside with them in the mornings for a few minutes.  He doesn't ever go out again until we get home from work at 5 or a little later.

Blue's last potty time is 8 or 9pm them he doesn't go until after 5 or 6am when my brother comes in the morning.  If I let him out around 9:30 he sometimes goes potty again or he sniffs the flowers, stares at birds, or passing cars.

Thanks everyone! That's just the kind of range of responses I was hoping to hear. I think Russell must be one of those who can hold it longer (what a welcome "problem" after the puppy housetraining days!!). Last night we did his last break at 8pm and I had no trouble this morning at about quarter to 8am. Another thing I forgot to take into account yesterday is that on Monday mornings when everyone's garbage is out on the sidewalk it is nearly impossible to get R to focus.

As for the itchies, he seems to be leaving them alone because they're already scabbed over - but I am definitely going to grab some Benadryl cream for a later date! Good idea, thanks again.

I would try Aloe Vera on the bug bite and try to keep Russell from aggravating it, if you can.

Our schedules for Mojo (Labradoodle) and Emma (Airedale), both 2, are:

We let them out in the backyard (fenced) for the first time at 5.00 am (about 5.30 or so on weekends), and then again about 5.45 a.m.  During either of these they generally poop, and Mojo pees both times, Emma the first time.

At 6 am we leave for the gym, then they're in the house til about 6 pm.

Obviously the very first thing we do is let them out when we come home, and they pee.

Then it's dinner time, and then a long walk for about 45 minutes to an hour or so.  Mojo almost always will poop and pee, Emma usually does, too, although sometimes she'll just pee.

Then we let them out in the backyard again around 8.30 or 9 pm, and then again, right before we head upstairs around 10.30 or 11 pm.

Beyond this schedule, they let us know if they need to go out.
