    Markie's weekend brag!

My feet are still not touching the ground!!!!

We showed Fri, Sat & Sun...Markie was surely on his game!

Best of Breed all three days!!!

    The BIG NEWS is.........
Group 4 Terrier Friday & Saturday

I was so excited on Friday, I thought he might have a shot at it as the same judge gave his son Popeye a group placement out of the puppy classes so we stayed in the 90 degree weather for Group..glad I did!!!

Saturday was a complete shock! I got a picture from the Best of Breed thinking I won't be getting one in group because I knew nothing of this judge. I've never shown to him in the past. When we went for the picture he said "I've never seen this dog before, he's very nice" I replied, "No sir, you haven't. He finished as a young pup and we are seriously specialing him this year" He then said he would have liked to have seen him growing up!!!
So of course I figured I better stay for Grouop again and Soooo glad I did!!

    CONGRATS!

Ok, obviously this is very good... but can you explain the group thing to me and what does specialing him mean?  And, you said he "finished" as a young pup.  What does it take to "finish"?

Hmm...I'll start with "specialing'...Specials...are any FINISHED CHAMPION still being shown in the Best of Breed class for it's breed. Most people do this only with very 'special' dogs because there is usually a higher level of competition in that class as you will be showing not only against all the 1st place winners of the usual classes...puppy, open, am bred, bred by...but ALSO against OTHER finished Ch. dogs (many of which will have big name professional handlers on them). Many people "campaign" a dog that is finished in order to obtain point sin order to "rank' the dog in the big overall point systems. These results basically are for braggin rights...saying you have a top 5 ranked XX....it makes a difference in stud fees, you get invited to special shows like Eukanuba & Westminster...and there might even me some money involved at the end of the year...not sure. It is a a huge investment of money and time to Special a dog...if you use a name handler it can go into 20k and more per year. Generally you want a "backer' for the dog...someone who puts thier name on as a co owner...and foots a lot of the bill for whatever compensation the parties agree on, stud fees, prestige whatever. Owner handlers and Breeder owner handlers that special dogs are always facing those folks that have a lot of money invested in their handlers and thus when they win taking breed or groups...its a big deal and worth crowing about!

Group.....the groups...terrier, herding, working, hound etc....are judged near the end of a show...the Best of breed or variety winners from ALL breeds shown go into the ring and are judged again within their groups....placements 1-4 are awarded...a Group placement is a big deal! A group 1 placement gives you entrance to the big one...Best in Show.

Finishing a dog with AKC takes 15 pts total...won under I believe at least 3 diff judges...and consisting of at least 2 MAJORS...majors are wins where you get 3-5pts in one show because of a high number of competing dogs. I believe the majors have to be under different judges...

Finishing a dog with UKC is different in that you need 100pts, under 3 judges I believe and 2 competition wins...but you can win up to 75 in one show weekend if you do well enough. In that registry Ch isn't really as big a deal as going further onto Grand Champion...etc. UKC also have BIS...best in show...and RBIS reserve best in show...which is nice.

    Thank you all!!

    Very well said Gina!

Markie is ALWAYS owner handled and funded by me. I try to show him show him two weekend out of the month and still keep some time for family which is really hard when you know to stay up there you MUSt be in the rings and winning.
Last I checked Markie is ranked #27, the points that we got this weekend will get us just up to the #25 dog if he hasn't won more as well.
Our biggest problem is that the amount of dogs in our area showing is very limited so I am best to travel to other areas which of course costs more and you always know there are other dogs out there looking to do the same thing. All we can do is our best and hope that works out in the judges eyes too

    Thanks for the explanations!

Markie is very handsome and if I were judge he'd always win!

Yay Markie! Max is wiggling his butt in excitement for you. Well, ok, he's wiggling his butt like a maniac, but it may or may not have anything to do with this.
