1. Which breed is your "heart" breed?
I really don't know. I love the Flat Coated Retriever, but I don't really think it's my heart breed so to speak. I can't imagine not living with a Flat Coat, however. What it comes down to LOL is I just need to be a multi-dog household so I can have a couple of my favorite breeds under one roof
2. Conformation or Working "show"?
I think it really depends on the breed. Ari is from conformation lines I suppose you could say, though those in her lines are also used for what the breed is designed for out in the field. Given her breeds small gene pool, there really isn't a great divide between show and working lines like there are in some breeds.
3. Small breeds or larger breeds?
I prefer medium to larger sized dogs. This isn't to say I don't love small dogs, because I absolutely do, but med-large just work best for our household. Ari is a nice medium size. She's about 60 lbs right on the nose.
4. Male or Female?
Depends on the breed really, but in general I tend to go for males (don't tell Ari, she may pay me back for that when I'm sleeping!)
5. On leash or off leash?
Ari is far too much of space cadet and apparently her owners are utterly inept at reinforcing the leave it and come here commands lol. If there's no one around aside from us, she's trustworthy to be off lead. If there are other people or dogs, forget it. I can call her off wildlife though oddly enough. Other dogs and people are just far too interesting for me to ever compete with. Though, now that's she's older, we are working more on this. Her attention level is leaps and bounds what it used to be like in her younger days.
6. Working breeds or "pet" breeds?
Even though I own a dog meant to take hunting with you, I don't "work" her in that aspect. Ari and all of our future dogs we have yet to meet will be pets only. Though down the line, I'd like to do better at channeling their natural instincts/desires into fun stuff they can do around the house (retriever bottled beverages, dirty clothes, and the like).
7. Long coat or short coat?
I like wash and go dogs. Though I AM a former groomer, I prefer to not have to spend my time with grooming. Ari's mediumish coat (short mostly, with feathering and a full tail) is perfect. It doesn't require all that much attention.
8. Fetch or long nap?
I like a dog who can go when we are going and nap/cuddle when it's down time (GIVEN that I of course and properly seeing to their exercise needs). Ari has settled very nicely into this. When she was a pup, it was GO GO GO GO GO and I swear we couldn't tire her to save our lives. Now she's ok LET'S GO, and later she'll settle in with a chew toy/bone/bully or nap.
9. Family member or beloved pet?
Ari is ultimately a dog, but she's more than just a pet. She's my beloved companion, confident, personal court jester (she seriously lives to make us laugh) and I guess I would say a member of our family.
10. Dry kibble or canned food?
Ari is fed primarily dry. She gets cooked and raw foods on occasion as well. If her stomach is bothering her, we go with a very bland canned diet for a couple of days.
