I'm new here

Haha- there really was no other choice as far as the username!![:D] They really are triple trouble, in a wonderful way of course.

Would you care to explain the rabies vaccine thing to me? I haven't heard about that and I seriously hope my guys aren't involved. I don't know if I would ever recover if I lost another one so young.

Apparantly a dog that had a rabies shot from ft dogde was still able to contract the disease.  It's kind of vague as to whether the shot gave him rabies or the shot didn't cover him and he contracted it from a rabid animal. Here's one article I was able to find:

Welcome to idog.  I'm so sorry to hear about your girl.

People, BEWARE!!!  Fort Dodge is trying to bring this killer back.  On a statement from my FORMER vets office was a little sticker to ask about the 6 month HW preventative.  When we asked if it was PH6 we were told no, it's something else.  Very likely PH6 with a new name.  I've researched extensively and haven't found another company even looking into making a 6 month preventative, so I'm sure FD is trying to sneak it back onto the market.

Lets get real here.....HW meds are toxic chemicals.  When you put any toxic chemical into the system that is to last SIX months, there is always the chance for the time release to fail and all that chemical to be dumped at one time.  PLEASE DON'T USE ANYTHING OTHER THAN A MONTLY HW PREVENTATIVE!

And yep, I was shouting on purpose.

For monthly heartworm prevention, Interceptor is good.
    • Silver
Ugh, that makes me sick!!! I mean, as responsible owners I think we must accept certain risks, like with vaccines, and yes, heartworm preventative. But what is so ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE to me is a company like Fort Death that knowingly lies about a dangerous product to convince people it is safe, when there are so many safer alternatives out there like Interceptor! My (ex) vet convinced me to get PH6  in the first place, saying how great it was because you couldn't forget to give it, and because they could measure an exact dosage according to weight. And it sounded pretty good! How convenient they were able to charge an office visit, since you can't give it at home like the pills. After my 4 YEAR OLD dog was ripped from my life I went so far as to stop strangers on the street and warn them so it would never happen to them! It made me feel less like my dog died in vain.

Glenda- please keep me updated on this if you find anything else out, especially if you know of any links or anything. My current vet refused to carry PH6 at the time my dog was killed, so I doubt if he will be fooled by that scam the second time around either, and I'm sure I won't be seeing that sticker for myself. Sounds like it might be time to talk with more strangers![:@]

Hi! Welcome to the forum (i-dog).

I am so sorry for your loss of Maggie. I too have lost a dog to PH6 (although many members are probably tired of me telling my story). Her name was Candy (her pic is in the very right of my signature)
    Here is her story:

Have you filed a report with the FDA? Sandra (who also lost her golden retriever, Hunter to PH6) may have the link to it, but I filled it out and somebody sent something back to me saying that "fort dodge does not think we have a case for you" or something along those lines. (I never got a necropsy done on her, so I really don't have any proof.)
Your current babies are absolutely adorable!

I didn't file the report with the FDA. I know I should have. Every time I sat down to write her story I wasn't able to do it because of the grief. I know that sounds really stupid, but it took about 6 months before I didn't break down crying about it every single day. I didn't get a necropsy either. When it was offered to me, I refused because I couldn't stomach the thought of it, and because I hadn't yet put 2 and 2 together. That came later, when I typed it into Yahoo search just on a whim and found the shocking results. But when we took her to the vet's office for the last time and said our final goodbyes, we were not thinking clearly enough to consider that her death might be a result of corporate greed and lies. The vet said she probably had a stroke. Yeah right, at age 4 and 3 days after receiving PH6. Likely story.[:@]

Welcome!  Your dogs are lovely - and what kind of fish do you have?  We have one little puppy and 3 tanks.

I am so sorry to hear about your Akita....this subject is new to me and I am trying to ascertain whether this brand of vaccine is even used in the UK.  I can't imagine going through what you have gone through. [:(]

I look forward to speaking with you more, and seeing more pics!

Benedict, I keep mostly South and Central American cichlids, but also have 1 betta tank. I keep a 5 gallon, 20 gallon, 29 gallon, 30 gallon, and 55 gallon, with 2 10 gallons and a 27 hex in storage. It's going to be awful moving them all, haha! One down, 4 to go. Anyway, if you ever want to talk fish, you should try going over to aquariumadvice.com and look for severum mama, that's me! I'm a freshwater mentor over there (one notch under a moderator). Lots of helpful folks there if you ever need anything.[:D]

You have a good sense of humor. I had a 16 pound cockapoo and called him Thor - to me it was a riot! I wanted to call Hershey (the bigger one) Sampson because of his long hair, but when my niece, daughter and mother and I went to pick him up as a 10 week old pup my neice and daughter ran in yelling hershey, thus the name Hershey. I didn't name Daisy. I'm actually her guardian for a breeder. So the breeder named her.

Your dogs are gorgeous. I'm a HUGE HP fan too. I'm going to be so heart broken when they're all done. I love them. Welcome!

    Welcome to the forum!

Your kids are adorable, especially Hagrid [;)] I love little fluffy dogs! I'm sorry Maggie was lost to that horrible drug, she was a beautiful girl.
    • Silver
Oh, my goodness. Maggie was gorgeous. You poor thing. I lost my 6 year old cockapoo, but it was to Addison's Disease. But now I'm scared to death. I've never heard of Fort Dodge. What was it that your dog got? A shot for HW? I use Heartguard. I haven't heard of anything bad about that, have you? My cockapoo, Thor, was at the vet every month for his DOCP shot and didn't get much other meds because of his illness. He fought bravely for two years, but his little body finally wore out. I was heart broken. I now have two puppies, and I don't want anything to happen to them. I'm going to have to research this a lot more. If anything ever happened to either of my dogs, I don't think I could take it.

    Good luck with your move.

Yes, rcocchi, my dog got a shot for heartworm prevention called Proheart 6. It's not on the market right now. They got so many reports of horrendous side effects that the FDA asked Fort Dodge to take it off the market. Fort Dodge called it a voluntary recall. Thanks to Glenda I will be watching to see if it is released again, and warning other owners accordingly.

    Sorry about Thor.

Everyone PLEASE remember that anything MORE than a one month HW treatment just is NOT safe...and most especially if its injected.  Don't let vets talk to you into these shots.

    Welcome.....
