Male dog squats to pee?

My male cockapoo, Thor, who is now at the bridge, was 6.5 years old when he died and he never stopped squatting. And my hershey who's 1 year old and male is still squatting. Who knows.

My Max, who is seven, has always squatted to pee.  He, very very rarely, lifts his leg.  We always say that he's just too lazy to lift the leg and he often pees on his front foot!

Malakai (great dane), is still intact, he is 1 years old and started lifting his leg at about 7 months, but he only lifts on walks, around other dogs ,and if we are in public, but at home he squats about 70% of the time..he must not feel the need to be "macho" around his mum lmao

Shaq at 3 years old and well over 200 pounds still squats. He always has! DH and I get the biggest laugh out of watching our big guy pee like a girl!  He was neutered rather early, but who knows????

After we got Marley (a female) a few years ago Shaq started trying to do a half-hearted lift of his leg. But he only lifts his toes maybe 3 or 4 inches off the ground. Basically still a squat, but even funnier [8D] goofy dog! Normally Shaq still does a full squat, but if there is a new plant, or we are on a walk, Shaq does the squat/lift combo.

We were at the dog park this a.m. and there was someone there with a 10 year old English Basset.  That dog was so wide and so low to the ground, all he did when he had to pee was lift the toes on his back leg.[:D] It was just so funny to watch him.

Blue doesn't squat, but he does this weird stretch and moves his back legs where they are kind of spread out. A few times he does lift his foot only a inch off the ground, but that is all and Blue is almost 3 yrs old.

I have five males.  ONE lifts his leg.  The others have not followed suite.

Lemme guess.  Thor?  Its actually quite common for only the alpha dog to leg lift.  Even if the Alpha is a female.  My Pint lifts her leg, but she would not let any of the males that my sister has had leg lift.  She was a very dominant dog.

Crusher lifts but only if there is something to stand against.  Once he tried to pee on my son's wagon so I moved the wagon midstream and just about died laughing as I watched him frantically trying ot keep his balance with nothing there in front of him.  He doesnt even lean of anything but if what was there is suddenly removed, he teeters a bit. LMAO

Depending on how he lifts he might trade the pee stains on his belly...for pee stains on his front LEGS!...lol...it's a skill...not hitting oneself or stepping in it afterwards!

That is exactly it.  Malcolm was a hiker because he was intact.  A few months after his neuter he started alternating between a squat and a hike.  Then one day he got it on his legs and was so grossed out (he's a neat freak - he limps if he steps in poo in the yard until I wash his foot), so he's hiking again!

I always thought it was a learned behavior, but I had the same thing with Malcolm - no male role model to learn from.  He was of course 13 mos old before he started, but something kicked in and he got the point.

Pofi squatted as a younger pup, was neuetered fairly early (just about 5 months), but had started lifting.  He lifts at least 50% of the time, but hasn't squatted in more than a year.  He's about 20 months old now and he's long legged, so he sometimes just leans into it.  Definitiely not a squat, more of a stretch/lean and he's WAY too long bodied to get any on his front legs, which are sort of stretched forward anyway.

Boss squatted when I first got him, but lifts now. He lifts his leg so high I swear he's going to fall over, it's usually way up over his body. The other way he goes is to stretch his body out, then stretch one back leg behind him and pee that way.

We giggle all the time because when Boss and my brother's dog are together, they stand next to each other and lift their legs to pee on the same spot at the same time.. silly boys!

Hi, My 3 yr old 110lb male Lab still squats and I always thought it was a learned behavior , but now I'm wondering if it's because he was neutered at an early age. Does anyone think it may be because of this? Just a thought. I actually like the fact that he still squats.

Well, on the twisted side of the story... My 2 year old FEMALE chihuahua lifts her leg to pee! lol!

I don't think neutering has anything to do with it.  Harley is not neutered yet and he squats.  He will be getting neutered very soon.

. The other way he goes is to stretch his body out, then stretch one back leg behind him and pee that way.

Murphy is a leg lifter, and occasionally he does this also! It cracks me up, and I always think of an ice skater doing one of their fancy gliding moves when Murphy does this. [sm=rofl.gif]
Occasionally he squats as well. Sometimes I think it's just laziness- it's just too darn hard to lift that leg. LOL [:)]
