Male dog squats to pee?

    • Gold Top Dog
I have five males.  ONE lifts his leg.  The others have not followed suite.

Amazing, I didn't think there were that many male squatters.  I just figured most male dogs leg lifted.  Wow, I learned something new today.[:D]

my mother in law's dog, Cujo, who must be around 3 now squats.  He's a shepherd/border collie mix, but doesn't socialize with other dogs so never learned how to lift.  It was really funny at first b/c we had never heard of such a thing...

Max (who is a little over 2) squatted forever - he just started lifting in the last few months. Sometimes he only lifts a little bit and sometimes his leg gets tired and he changes legs mid pee,  pretty much insuring that he's going to pee on his leg. Sometimes he goes up to a pole or tree and lifts the outside leg *sigh* and sometimes he forgets exactly what he's supposed to be doing and squats and lifts a front paw.[:D] I figure as long as he peeing outside, I don't really care much how he does it.

OMG Joyce!!!!  Please get some pictures, PLEASE!!   Max is too funny.

FWIW - Slick is 11 months old, neutered at 6 months and lifts his leg on exactly ONE tree.  I thought nothing of it, he likes that tree, whatever - until I noticed that is the tree of choice for the HUGE absolutely vicious, totally aggressive, monster dog in my building.   WTF is Slicky thinking????

My 12 year old Papillon Zippy still squats. I'll say he goes about 50/50 - squatting and lifting. Even though he will mark when we're out for a walk, he empties in one spot at home for potty purposes. If he needs to do an Austin Powers Pee (who coined that?? Someone here, I forget) he'll squat. Actually, its more of a LEAN, but still...

When he lifts his leg, he almost ALWAYS pees on his front legs. *sighs* Drives me batty.

In my house both my boys (1-1/2 yo Aussie/Lab & 3-1/2 yo Basset-foster) squat.  The only one who sometimes lifts the leg is my almost 2yo FEMALE foster ACD!  She tries to pee on top of the Basset when he is squatting!  [:o]  What's worse is Bud lets her!  UUUGGGHHH - anybody want a pea-stain headed Basset?

OMG! This is too funny, I am at work laughing my behind off and everyone is looking at me like I am crazy.  He is a beautiful boy.  My Romeo, is a lifter, even in his sleep he lifts a leg (thank God he does not pee) now Mindy the peekapoo who just came to live w/us and idolizes him is starting to lift her leg, is too funny to see, because she  will start squatting and slowly raises herself and her little leg.  They are jsut adorable.[:D]

My Mal is 3 at the end of the year, he mostly lifts his leg but sometimes he will squat. I figured he was just too lazy or tired to lift his leg. When I see him squat I say to him "stop peeing like a puppy". He is not desexed.

Odin cracks me up when we're walking. He will sniff to find the perfect tree or bush. Usually it's on some sort of incline or he'll dig his way into some bushes. Then he'll lift his leg as high as possible--straight up in the air--and start peeing. If he's on a hill, he usually loses his balance and hops along still peeing. In the bushes, he gets all tangled. Amazingly though he doesn't end up peeing on himself. Loki just looks at him like he's crazy and squats in the tall grass.

Grey squats. I've only seen him lift his leg maybe ten times in nearly three years. Brown is a squatter too, but if he has a really good plant to pee on (like at my mom's house lol) or is in another place where other dogs have blessed something, he'll lift.

Generally entire dogs will cock their leg by about 6 months, often after watching another male.
Boys that have been neutered early, ie before they have learnt to lift their leg often remain squatters.
If neutered as soon as they start they often revert to swatting.
This info is from an old Guide dog info sheet.

Obviously all dogs are different but I have never known an entire dog squat if there was a tree handy unless their hips or legs were sore.
    Best.

By ENTIRE dog do you mean intact?  Thor started lifting his leg quite early.  He was nuetered just before age 3.  Shadow never started lifting.  He was over a year when he was nuetered.  Thunder, almost a year, and never lifted, Tyler was 9 months, never lifted and Theo is still intact at 11 months and still doesn't lift.  He's being nuetered on his first birthday!  Poor guy...and I only say that because his testicles haven't descended and it'll be a bit rougher surgery.  Thor still lifts, they have plenty of trees available, but no one else lifts.

My female border colie mix squats at home in the yard, but when I walk her at the park, she marks 15 or so times in 3 miles, and lifts her leg!  A trainer told me that it is possible inutero for a female to be close to a male and possibly get too much testosterone.  ?  She has also had a litter of pups; I adopted her afterward.  Go figure!
My male lab/cocker lifts or squats, whatever he prefers at the time.

Russell is 1 (neutered at 8mo) and still squats. I hope he always does, because he's neat about it, lowering straight down to the ground. With all the fur on his legs and belly I shudder to think of the mess that leg-lifting could make. He's a pretty submissive dog and I wonder if that has anything to do with it - I've seen him mark something exactly 2 times in his whole life (in squat position).

My minpin hikes his leg on just about everything. He's 10 now. He recently stopped marking in the house about 2 years ago, the tird, after I placed my last male show dog and was down to only him and 2 spayed girls (bichons) who are submissive to him.

He's such a tird about marking on everything.  Be thankful you have a squatter, because the area where I potty my dogs in the yard has to be hosed off because the privacy fence starts to stink eventually from him peeing on it all the time.

I swear I will never have any boys again.
