Natural allergy remedies?

    Natural allergy remedies?

Hey guys. I know most of you are educated in a lot of holistic remedies for dogs, so I figured someone might have some suggestions for allergies? I get really really bad allergies. Nothing specific sets me off. Most seasons bother me, it's not specific to spring, fall etc. It's the worst in the morning and evening. I heard this is because this is when your immune system is at it's lowest- not sure if that's true or not though. Anyway, I get a really runny nose, sneezy, itchy throat, runny itchy eyes, etc. Sometimes it feels like my inards are infested with poison ivy and I get really drowsy and feel like I have a cold almost. I usually take a Reactine when it gets bad, but that only helps so much and I'd rather find a natural route than put chemicals into my body almost daily. Any suggestions? Maybe Callie knows something? Thanks for any help, guys!

I'm sure Callie will be along soon.  Just wanted to pass along what my doctor told me.  Antihistamines are not really rescue meds.  They are more effective if they build in your system.  For example, if Kale is going to go to his friends house for the night, we start giving him benedryl the day before, on a schedule to combat his severe allergy to the cats over there.  If we just give him benedryl an hour or so before he goes, he's home by midnight with swollen eyes, runny nose, sneezing etc.

I know that that's not what you're looking for, just wanted to give you an insight as to why the Reactine isn't working well for you.

Oh, and it is my understanding that the symptoms of allergies are actually your bodies defence mechanism against something it perceives as a threat.  So technically your immune system seems to be going full force in the morning.  This is probably because we tend to breathe through our mouths at night, and doing so takes away the filtration system the hairs in our noses provide.  Thus exposing us to more pollutants  than at other times of the day.  Just my thought though.

Calli mentioned a couple a long while back for my daughter to try...some kind homeopathics that dissolve on your tongue. Can't recall the names now...but we just went to the medication area of  Central Market, and they were there. I'll say this,...when Lily had a BAD attack I would give them to her and they did seem to work BUT I do suspect it was a lot of placebo effect because we had them a long time...much past their "good by" date and I'd give them to her and get the same effect. She is on allegra now as a maintence med...good ole Benedryl for flare ups.

I've heard tell that LOCAL...and I do stress LOCAL honey can work wonders...you take a teaspoon or two every day. Theres something about the allergen being in the honey I think.

That would make sense, especially if the allergy is to pollen.  That's what allergy shots are, they introduce the allergen into your system to build a resistance to them.  On that note, perhaps I could have Kale go lick the neighbors cats once in a while...Stick out tongue

I had something typed then I realized we were discussing licking cats and well, I just erased it.

"Local" honey -- meaning **unfiltered** honey from an apiary near you.  Raw honey contains minute amounts of pollen that stuck to the bees -- if you take 1/2 teas or so of honey a couple of times a day that minute amount of that "allergen" (that's why local is important -- it should be some of the very things you're allergic to in the air)  -- that sugar-based honey zooms straight to the bloodstream with that pollen and literally nudges the immune system to send out it's own anti-histamine to 'deal' with the threat.

That said -- any over-the-counter antihistamine is FAR more effective taken on a daily basis.  Because the point is to have the anti-histamine IN your body to deal with the allergens as they come in -- in honesty, even tho I do a lot of holistic and homeopathic things I *also* take Benedryl simply because my allergies are that bad.  They trigger my asthma so one of the ways I keep the asthma at bay is to keep the allergies minimal.  I only have to take it at night when I can't take anything else.

There are a couple of herbal allergy things but I've never used them.  Homeopathy works better for me.

(psst, Gina -- homeopathics almost can't "expire" -- unless they were left open to the humidity, but anything sold as a medicinal traditionally has to have a "sell by" date here but they'd still be good LONG after)

Boiron makes Sabadil -- which is a blend (comes in blister packs) - health store item.  works really darned well.

-Heel makes "Allergy" -- and that is probably THE most effective of all of them.  Whole Foods generally carries -Heel products.

The pollen-in-honey thing is an example (and almost the only example I can think of) of a "naturally occurring" homeopathic.  Homeopathy is a whole separate branch of alternative medicine -- it's not 'natural' and it's not 'herbal'.  A homeopathic is simply a 'thing' that is diluted down almost to the point where it's not recognizable as that substance any more -- and it's put in either a sugar or alcohol base.

Sugar/alcohol make it get into the bloodstream faster.  Usually they are taken under the tongue so they absorb directly into the bloodstream.  But it merely nudges your body to "respond" to that thing.  It's a bit similar to how a vaccine causes a reaction in the body except it's less dangerous (far less potent material and it only uses sugar or alcohol for delivery to the body)

The one drawback to homeopathy is it doesn't last a long time in the body -- there's no 'time release' -- you typically have to take a homeopathic every 4 hours or so.

Done by an expert and administered properly homeopathy can actually *cure* certain things that regular medicine can't.  for example -- 6 years ago I was so asthmatic that I was taking 3-4 breathing treatments A DAY -- plus a ton of inhalers and being on steroids most of the time just to exist.  The side effects were nearly killing me.

I got desperate and started looking at homeopathy to help deal with the side effects to the steroids and I fell into something that actually has elminated the asthma almost totally.  I have the occasional mild attack -- RARELY (maybe twice a year??) usually early in the morning (yeah after breathing with my mouth open all night!).  But the effectiveness of it is amazing.

A couple of years ago I found a really good homeopath who also does acupuncture (occasionally Amanda and I both will talk about homotoxicology which we've had done for the dogs and that's what it is) and he has virtually wiped out my asthjma -- it's amazing.  It doesn't just control the symptoms -- I just plain don't HAVE such severe asthma any more.

The best part about homeopathy is it is FAST.  If I breathe in something that triggers a sneezing attach, when I put an "Allergy" tab under my tongue it will literally stop me mid-sneeze attack and STOP it.

My 4-year old Tibetan terrier Shayna has been having terrible allergies for about a year now. She's been on steroids, antibiotics (on and off), benadryl  and nothing seems to help her. It started with obsessive hind paws licking and now progressed to scratching her ears, cheeks, and the groin area. The last thing our vet suggested is to put her on a food diet for 6 weeks, which I did. She's been on Hill's prescription diet for 3and 1/2 weeks now but I don't see any improvement at all. I've read a number of posts and  it seems like a very common problem. I would like to try some of homeopathic remedies listed here. I just want to check if I should still continue giving her benadryl as well. I figure I probably haven't been giving it to her consistently enough (skipping a doze here and there). I want to try bathing her more frequently, using tea to wipe off her feet and, as I said, the homeopathic remedies. Do you think I should start with just one? If so which one would you recommend?

I would tell you to look                  for a blend like Heel's "Allergy" or one of the Newton Ones -- you will need to give it every 6 hours or so.  Homeopathics need to be given NOT with food -- I'm at work so I really don't have time to post a comprehensive answer, but feel free to email me at callieatcritturs@yahoo.com and I'll help you figure out what to use and  how to ... the reason the Z-Diet or special vet food isn't working is because your dog likely has atopic (inhaled) allergies and NOT a food allergy.    You can continue to give Benedryl.  But be aware, you have to use Benedryl consistently (at least twice a day and for several weeks) to have it do much because part of what it should do is help as the body breathes in NEW allergies -- not just reacting to what's already in the body.

The other homeopathic I'd tell you to use is Hylands "Oak 'n Ivy" --  it really helps with the itching.

The other thing I'd strongly recommend you to try is TCVM (TRaditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine - the herbals they have are incredibly helpful -- and the acupuncture is a huge help).

Let me know and I'll help you.
