How does your dog tell you that he has to go out?

Beau will walk in circles around me whining. If I tell him to "get" and he returns very shortly to whine, then he has to go out. If he doesn't return, and lays quietly after telling him to "get", then he was just trying to get my attention for play, food, water, etc.

hey i got a 10 year old male beagle named Beau. lol

Beau will just lay by the door and whine or try to make us feel sorry for him until he finally does what he tought him to do when he has to go the restroom, bark lol. our other dog, keira the 2 year old female blonde golden retriever/collie will walk around everyone and then get hyper sometimes and run at the door and bark finally. sometimes me or my mom will give in and let them out without barking lol.

I live with my parents, i'm 18 just graduated high school. I plan to apply for a 911 operator job in august. Also i'm new here. nice to meet you people. My name's Cody. Marley is trained to ring a bell to go out. It is so funny we have a slider to the backyard and a door. The bell is on the door...if we leave the slider open, he will still ring the bell at the door to go out LOL[:D]

Since we haven't installed our doggie door yet, and since my crew are still a bit antsy from the move, they actually play outside or in the dog proofed garage much of the day if the weather isn't too hot.  When they are inside, they are very clear about needing to go outside....they go to the door they use and stand there, and if they aren't noticed, will give a gentle scratch to the door.  Because they prefer to be inside, no one abuses the privledge...they ask to go outside when they NEED to go outside.  But we also have pretty defined times when they will be PUT out to go potty.  So we have a combination of mudpuppies strict potty times and the at will potty times.  I have NO problem with someone wanting to go out, even if it IS just to play.  But, then again, with six large dogs, I don't really want them getting the zoomies in the HOUSE!

My 1yr old poodle has been ringing a bell for months to tell me he wants to go outside. I'm so glad I taught him to do it. We watch T.V. in the back of the house and without the bell we wouldn't know Dugan has to go, since he doesn't scratch or bark at the door. The only problem is he sometimes rings just to go out for no reason. My new puppie Maddie(10wk old) is taken out frequently and is doing very well with her training. I even caught her nudging the bell with her nose the other day. Maybe she's catching on too.

We have a doggy door, which the dogs and I looove, but I have to keep it closed for much of hte day because my toddler will go through it.
So Lexi the bichon will sit in front of me, wag her tail wildly and either make her mouth as if she was going to bark but not say anything. If I ignore this she will eventually bark.
Darby the bichon will sit at the door.  That's about it for her.
Gobie the minpin terror will jump up and down at the door and sometiems bark.

Cookie will scratch and whimper at the door. But lately, due to a bad cold, my hearing hasn't been the greatest. So now, she whimpers, scratches, jumps up on the door and whimper-howls...she's part beagle so I'm sure you can imagine what this sounds like...starts off with a whimper and ends in like a howl/bark.

And if I still don't hear her, she'll go for the nearest piece of paper and shred it to bits. Not eat it, just shread it.

If anyone needs some documents shredded, send them my way. Cookie will be more than happy to take care of that for you. [;)]

Shadow sits near the closest door, no matter which one we take her out of.  That's her signal.

Kota will come to you and stare you down.

Tasha, I think she will whine, but I"m not sure.

Pepper will walk to a door and do a sniffing thing.

In the morning, if we're being lazy, they all get up and start making a racket, playing, snarling, rubbing against the bed to get us up. [:D]

Neela will do a little jump if we are standing or put her front paws on us(or just paw at us) if we are sitting.  Then we ask her "do you wanna go out?"
If she jumps around or dances in a circle, or runs towards the door then she has to go.  If not she just wants attention and will usually go get a toy![:D]

Ben is on Lasix for mild thoratic congestion.  When it hits him, he's gotta GO.  He comes and stares at me like he's trying to burn holes in my head.  You know the look if you've ever seen a BC do it.  I make a little game out of it if I'm pretty sure it's not THAT urgent, ie, he just went.  I'll say, "Did Timmy fall in the well?"  and Ben will run to the door and jump up and slam into it like it's a flyball box.  If what he wants is actually food, he'll go get his bowl instead and slam it on the floor, PONG-ONG-ONG-ong-ong, right at my feet.  If the water fountain thingie in the kitchen is out, he'll run and diassemble it and scrape the bowl part around the kitchen like a hockey puck.

The rest of my guys go out and on command, not being allowed to play or work until they've taken care of business.  Doug the Dog does sometimes ask to go out - he does the staring thing but adds vocals, a steadily increasing bark sequence:  yoof . . .yooof . . .rooof! . . .WOOF!

Gracie will whine softly at the door. She isn't very vocal at all, I wish she would bark it would make it easier to hear her, instead of making her have to do the potty dance until we notice.

Gipper (that's right, Gipper) will just lay down in my room untill I take her out - as if he isn't trained - but has never had an accident.
    • Gold Top Dog
Cassidy will sit by the door and look out, and if no one lets her out she just lays by the door till someone does. With our old screen door, she could let herself out, by pushing on it with her nose, but since we got a new one, she's not able to do that. We didn't mind at all her going out by herself; she's allowed to.

Mirelle doesn't really do anything to let me know she has to go out! She's almost 7 months already, and the only thing she does is wander around,  going to the door, or just walking around. So I can tell if she has to go out if I see her, but she will have an accident before she whines or barks at all to let us know she has to go!

All great stories! Lol, I like the one who said the dog just lies around and such and when he's let out he goes. The only thing with that is, do you take random guesses on when your dog has to go out to use the restroom?
    • Gold Top Dog
When you've lived with them for any length of time you kind of know when they are gonna need to go.  It's pretty predictable that they need to go out in the morning and at certain times during the day and evening and for sure right before bed.  So there really isn't any guess work involved.
