I love the name! It's pronounced 'kwanah". Charles' family are related in some way to Cynthia Ann Parker. I forget the details of how they are related but her story has always been a favorite of mine.
He's so beautiful.
ETA to clarify.
I guess we are "cousins" now:-) Many of the people who were either captives, or in the case of eastern peoples, "coureurs de bois," preferred the native way of life (that happens now, too) and did not wish to return to the European ways. Here's the Wiki on Charles' family member:

She was finally buried with her son, Quanah. Here's his story: http://www.lone-star.net/mall/texasinfo/quanah.htm
It's so hard to straddle the line between two cultures - he did it with magnificence. I find that dogs do the same - they live in a culture that is dominant over them, yet they retain their nature, and their dignity the best way they can. And, fifteen thousand years after the first wolf sat by a human campfire, they are still here, too, deserving of our respect as our four legged relations. I guess by now you know that I never name an animal casually. A name needs to be representative of the dignity and respect with which you consider its recipient.
