I guess Max needs a new crate

I came home tonight after going out for four hours, thinking I had left Max securely in his crate, only to have him hop off one of the chairs and come running over to me when I went to take him out of his crate. He busted out. Luckily he didn't tear anything up, or have any accidents on the floor. I think he just slept in the chair most of the time, except when people came by and just decided to ignore him down there (and probably would have gotten mad at me if he had destroyed anything. His current crate is a midwest folding crate, which obviously is a piece of junk. I need a 24x36 crate for him, as that's the size of his bed, which I just spent $50 or so on. Would Petsmart or Petco carry that size in store? I've never seen anything but wire crates in that size in store, but then again i've never looked.

You might could look on Ebay for a replacement crate.  Many times even with shipping costs, you'll spend less on a pet item from Ebay (or another online place) than you would at many of the local pet stores.

I did just check Petsmart's online page.  There is a 24" x 36" Midwest double door folding crate for less than a hundred bucks.  I didn't look further, but I bet they have other brands of folding crates in the size you need.

The other day I saw a 30" x 48" triple door crate at our local Petco.  Gosh, that was a big crate!!!  I'm sure that you can find the replacement you're looking for at any pet place!!!  Good luck!!!

I have bought all my crates and crate pads from ebay store, For Happy Dogs: [linkhttp://stores.ebay.com/For-Happy-Dogs]http://stores.ebay.com/For-Happy-Dogs[/link] .  I have been pleased their prices and service.  They have the "wicker" crates there for much less than other retailers.

The Midwest Double Door Folding Crate is the piece of junk he busted out of. For the purposes of space and using the same bed, i'd like to stick to the same size. I think he'd eat his way out of a wicker crate, because there was a wicker chair that he tried munching on before it was moved away from where he could get to it. I have certainly considered the Dog.com option, and at least it would be coming from in the same state. I'd just have to hope for no further escapes for a few days. I probably will just do that if I can't find anything in a store today.

Do you know what quality Midwest crate it was, Jen? We have the Premium or Deluxe or Ultimate or something.  I can't remember . . it's the top-quality Midwest one and it is sturdy.  Their lower-priced models are flimsy comparatively.  We got ours from the For Happy Dogs e-bay seller.

Obviously it was a crappy one. I think it was whatever the coupon we got when we adopted him could be used on, so it wasn't expensive. I ended up buying him a plastic crate at Petsmart. I went to Petco, and one for his size was $115.99 [sm=eek.gif]. I went over to Petsmart, and they had the same exact thing for $59.99. I should remember to tell this to the family who's kid I work with who are planning to get a dog. On a side note, I hope they get approved for the dog they wanted. They were sending the application this morning when I was there.

I just got a 24x36 crate for Sydney at Wal-mart for $58 and it's airline approved, hard plastic crate.   FYI

Zip ties work wonders if he bouncing off the top trying to get the sides to collapse.

Here is what the rattan (wicker) crates look like when chewed on.. Not a good choice for Max

I don't know about the zip ties. We zip tied the crate we had for the previous dog, and she still escaped. We inspected it and couldn't figure out how, but she did it. The bars weren't bent, the zip ties where still intact, and the crate was still closed. How she got out we will never know. At least yesterday I could tell that he somehow got the front panel to fall in.

Trishanne, I bet it didn't take too long for that to happen. Max would be out of there pretty fast once he realized he could eat his way out, and i'd be hoping his iron gut could stand up to that, and that i'd be pulling it from his butt the next day instead of taking him to the emergency vet to get it out of him.

Boy, did they go after that rattan crate!  I've had mine through both dogs as puppies, and for some reason neither chewed it at all.  They chewed everything else in the house, just not the crate.  However, my parrot did a decent job when he had a go at it!
