Is neutering safe?

    Is neutering safe?

Murphy will be neutered on Wednesday the 14th.
I am having so much anxiety about this..... is a 4 year old dog too old?
Do dogs usually suffer a lot of complications? I'm so worried about him, he's my baby.

Neutering is definetly safe.  Its recommended for any dogs that are not going to breed.  I don't believe 4 years old is too old, if the vet said its okay then it should be okay.

Your baby will be fine, he'll just need some rest a few days afterwards and a lotta love.[:)]

Don't worry...he will be fine! We had our beagle (who is now at the rainbow bridge) nuetered when he was 10 years old. So, 4 shouldn't be too old [:)]

Yes, neutering is safe and will also keep him from getting testicular cancer.

Don't worry about it! I used to work at a small vet clinic, and we usually did 2-4 spay or neuters everyday. I've NEVER seen anything go wrong, regardless of age. The actual surgery after they are under and everything, usually takes about 5 minutes!!

Its very safe and provides a ton of heath benefits to him in the long run... just have some good treats for him when he gets home and let him rest.

I dont know that ANY age is too old... if the dog is too old to withstand the anesthesia then of course he can have it done, but that would involve other health issues.  Good luck!

Nutering takes less time than a spay and is done in steral conditions. It's a simple surgery for a vet so there are few complications involved. Unless he is something like a criptorcid but I'm shure your wouldn't have to worrie about that. As long as both testicals are in ther normal place everything should go smoothly.

Don't worrie about the age, a lot of older dog go through this and come out fine. It should take about 30 days for the hormones to wear off so you may not notice a difference right away.

Four years old is not too old. I think it's better to get this done when they are out of that puppy stage as they have matured. He will be fine, alittle sore for a few days but really you will be more worried then he will be.

My baby is 3 at the end of the year and when we get back to Aus I will be getting him done. I have waited simply because Malamutes can be puppies for 4 years. I would put it off for another year but we will be getting a female when we get home (a playmate for him) and I am not going to be breeding, also the health reasons too. I think that dogs that are neutered or spayed have a longer life span also.

Neutering is very safe. If your dog was geriatric (older than he is now) the vet would need to do a blood panel to help determine how to administer anesthetic. The operation is simple for males. They open at the front of the scrotum and remove the testicles. Then, they sew it up with dissovable stitches. Some vets will let you take them home later that day. Some, such as my vet, may require an overnight stay. Some dogs are bouncing off the walls the next day. But it could be a day or two before they are back up to full speed. A week after the op, you won't know he's been neutered except for the shaved spot. It is an extremely routine surgery that should prevent no complications and your dog's future health will be for the better, because of it.

I forgot to mention in my previous response to you that my dog was neutered at 2.5 years.
