I found this.. not Darby but how I'd like her to look eventually.  Do you think I'd be wrong to keep her like that?

    • Gold Top Dog

Why would you be wrong? It's your dog to groom as you wish! It might not be another person's choice, but if it's not hurting the dog to groom it differently, then why not?

In Mini Schnauzers I see the gamut, from shaved right down, to profuse furnishings, to left longer like a poodle almost, to every range in between. I do my own thing, which is different from the next person's. There's no right or wrong (unless you are showing in conformation) when it comes to how you want to groom your dogs!

I've been flamed for trying different hairdos on her by bichon people before- obviously I am overly sensitive to critisism LOL

As an aside- she had yeasty lips and toes and since I shaved her feet/face 2 days ago, the skin is dried out now and not wet/yeasty, just nice dry and pink skin. :)

Kim- I had a grooming client (schnauzer) in NY who was kept in a teddy trim- fluffy head, long ears. No eyebrows, just a rounded head.  Very very cute!

That's what I mean. It wouldn't be my thing to clip a schnauzer that way, but everyone can choose to clip as they see fit, as long as the dog is healthy, and happy, and there's no harm being done!

I think some of the *Bichon people* (once you hit hard-core fans, yes sometimes there are extremes of belief systems) can stick to grooming the way they want, and you should do precisely as you want!

Some people are traditionalists when it comes to grooming certain breeds and strongly feel the breed should always be groomed according to the breed standard. You see this the most with serious breeders/fanciers of breeds like Bichons, PWDs, terriers. It's funny that Poodle people don't seem to feel the same this way about there breed (probably cause no one in the right mind keeps a Poodle they aren't showing in a full continental clip LOL).

There is nothing at all wrong about grooming your dog to look however you want to. It's fun and certainly doesn't bother the dog. I would love to see a Bichon in a lion clip :) I know a Crested breeder who had one of her Puffs groomed in a lion clip for awhile and I thought it looked very cool.

You know, even though the Crested standard doesn't specify (says the face and ears *may* be trimmed), people get their panties in a twist about full faces and ears. I say live with it. It's my dog, I'll do what I want.

Especially if it helps her health!!!! I always thought clean faces were cute on a bunch of breeds. My coworker keeps her Shih Tzus in clean faces, and they're SO CUTE!!! All the hair is just not practical, for a pet, particularly if they eat wet food all the time. It's gross, and sore, when they stay wet all the time. Far, far from wrong to give her relief.

Thanks for the encouragement. I cannot believe how much better her lips are.  All dried out, not red and oozy and doesn't have that musty ooky smell to her face anymore.  She is stinking cute!  The neighbor came over and asked "now whose dog is this?"   lol

If her lips are better from being shaved, then isnt that a good enough reason to keep her like that? Stick out tongue

You should post some pics of her new haircut Wink

there she is. She hates the flashy box.  She has been much more playful and cuddly with her face hair short.  Cute? Or no? :)

    • Gold Top Dog

Way cute!  I'm a fan of cuts other than the traditional bichon one as I've always thought it looked a bit goofy lol.  Even better that it makes her feel better!

    • Gold Top Dog

Very cute! I really like her new haircut. I think I'd perfer that over the traditional bichon cut, and its great that it makes her feel better and helps her lips, too!
