Well, let me explain the situation.
My husband is a CO at a prison, and they have a few dogs who run around in the prison yard. One of them is a white German Shepard who has a mysterious past. Brett was told that he was a customs dog, and one day, he just "snapped" and wasn't the same again so somehow he ended up at the jail. He wasn't trained to guard the area. They just kept him because they considered him crazy.
Anyway, the warden, who used to train the police dogs for the parish and city, ran through a list of commands in several languages, and the dog didn't respond to any of them. Brett said the dog goes nuts everytime someone passes by, and the trustees have to feed him by literally flinging his food into his kennel because no one can go near him. Everytime Brett makes his rounds around the perimeter of the yard, the dog, who we named Happy (because he's so grouchy lol), is constantly chewing on the fence or doing his best to intimidate whoever is passing by. Brett doesn't fear him (since they're separated by a fence), and he talks to Happy for a while everytime he passes, but it hasn't made much of a difference. As far as the fence chewing goes, I think he's an aggressive chewer because he has toys, and he chews up his stainless steel bowls, which are really thick and have to be replaced every month. So I managed to convince Brett that Happy is a chewer and wasn't trying to eat his way through the fence to get to him. Whether that's true or not, I don't know, but it made Brett feel better. lol
So I'm wondering how this dog could have forgotten everything he knew and changed his behavior so drastically. Also, is there any way to get Happy used to Brett passing by?
