Max needs some good vibes. Update!

This afternoon I came home from work and took a shower.  When I got out, Max was laying on the landing at the top of the stairs.  He looked ok until a couple minutes later he threw up.  Then I went to check on him and he couldn't get up.  He couldn't move right at all.  I suspect he had a seizure or something similar although I didn't actually see him seize.  I was trying to get dressed, call the vet, and keep him from tumbling down the stairs all at the same time.  The vet said to bring him right in (I so love my vet) and as soon as we could I took him in.  I had to carry him down the steps, but he was able to walk to the car and then needed a lift into the car.

When we got to the vet, he was fine.  Still panting quite a bit, but not as wobbly as before.  The vet had the tech walk him up and down the hall and noticed him leaning to the left a bit.  She said it could have been a seizure or stroke.  Since I didn't see the whole episode we can't be sure.  She did a full blood panel on him and we should hear results by tomorrow.  She also is referring us to a neurologist who can do a cat scan to see if there is a brain tumor.

DH suggested that it could be the carpet powder he used on the floor today.  I totally didn't think of this when she asked if he had gotten into any toxins.  I couldn't find anything online about it being toxic.  We used Glade carpet and room odor eliminator if anyone can find any info on that and pets having bad reactions.

But keep Max in your thoughts.

I will, most definitely.   I hope he's ok and that whatever it is isn't serious or life threatening.

Good vibes coming from here too.  Hope they can get to the bottom of this and that it turns out to be something minor.

The glade powder does have a warning on the back of the label about not letting pets walk on it (or something like that). I have used it though with no problems so I don't know how toxic it really is. I kind of think that maybe it's just a skin irritant. Either way, I hope he is ok!

A cat scan is going to be pricey -- and honestly I wouldn't do that FIRST to rule out a tumor unless he seizes repeatedly (if there is a tumor usually that happens -- they can even cluster easily).  I"m not saying I wouldn't do it -- just that I wouldn't do it FIRST.

Bloodwork YES for sure.  But honestly -- I know Meg can't even get Pirate NEAR a "plug in" -- much less something all over the floor that their nose would be into.  I can almost betcha -- PARTICULARLY since he threw up -- that it was likely a toxic episode.

If you possibly can I would try to get him to a TCVM vet -- I just emailed you with a few near you but  I don't know your zip code.

I was just talking to 3 girls -- the big deal is you don't WANT them to put the dog on phenobarbitol if you can help it.  It's **instantly** additctive and the side effects are huge.  If you can do it with an herbal (which has NONE of the side effects and you often adjust the dose to less and less rather than more and more) it would be helpful.

The other thing is, if he's had a toxic reaction you want to help detox the body and get RID of that.  If he licked his feet and ingested some of it -- it could whack out his liver/kidney values FAST.  You don't want that to stay in the body.

As a matter of fact -- as soon as you get him home I would give milk thistle just as a precaution to help the body process everything (including any anesthesia or whatever the vet has to give in order to get testing done).

I sent you my phone -- let me know if there is ANY way I can help ok??  I KNOW how scarey this is.  Tyring to do it **all** at once - keep them from falling get them UP, get them down stairs, deal with vomit -- AND your own emotions -- it's all darned scarey.

Remember -- this IS a herder -- often they are just plain wired differently that other dogs and sometimes toxins will affect them differently.  Now Jewilee has herders too but ... that would be pretty much exactly the type of reaction I'd think of ... particularly the vomiting and then unresonsiveness.  Poor guy.

*hugs* to all of you -- man, how scarey.
