Is my toy poodle to old to be neutered????

My toy ;poodle is a year and a half old, and the vet now tells me he should be neutered. Though I cant help but wonder if this is too old. He is in good health, and a wonderful personality. [8|]

     What should I do? [:(]

I don't think he is too old now. I don't know if it is true with dogs, but I had my cat Mocha fixed when he was 5 or 6 yrs. old and the vet told me he wasn't to old to get it done.

Someone should come around soon and give you some more advice

I don't know if there would be any extra precautions with toy breeds, but I would imagine you would nuetur them later, rather than very young, just to make sure they were full size for easier surgery - which he is at now.

I would definately nuetur now.  I waited till mine was two and  1/2, but I think it should have been done about 1 1/2 years because he did start developing a tendency to mark inside the house.  I don't believe in early nuetering (below 6 months) if you are absolutely sure that the dog absolutely, absolutely, would not ever be lose to mate.

I think this is a perfect time.  He might start marking territory more as he gets older, and whenever he does smell a female in heat, then he will do WHATEVER it takes to get to her -- and that includes maybe hurting himself to get "out".     Also, they do tend to be more aggressive toward other males and other males will fight him when they smell him because they "know" he still has the "stuff" to mate and that makes him a competitor.  So, he is safer from unwanted attacks from other male dogs.   It also eliminates testicular cancer.

The six year old male toy poodle that I recently adopted was not neutered until he was 5 years old, as he was used for breeding.  It's never too late to neuter or spay a dog.

I definatly agree, its better than an unexpected litter

My male Brando was neutered at 18 mos. and my female Trixie was spayed at 7yrs.old. they were not done earlier because they are both retired show dogs, but they did very well. There are cancer issues that will be avoided w/  the procedure.Someone w/more knowledge will be on to tell you why you should

A year and a half old is NOT too old to neuter -- and as everyone has said, I'll echo It's NEVER too late to spay/neuter.

My sheltie mix I didn't neuter until he was 9/12 because my ex wouldn't let me.  And then suddenly he had this 'bulge' just to the right of his anus -- he had a peri-anal hernia.  The testosterone sits in their system and literally rots the musculature (my vet's words, not mine).  It's a very expensive thing to correct surgically -- and had I not had an ingenious vet who took pity on me and helped me out, I'd have lost Foxy at 9 1/2.  As it was he lived to be one month shy of NINETEEN.

One of the females we adopted was 10 1/2 and heavily heartworm positive when we took her -- and yes, they spayed her for us WHILE she was heartworm positive.  She did FINE.  Boxer/pit mix with heart/lungs very very injured from the heartworm but she did FINE and lived to be 17 1/2 despite all of that.

They have a MUCH better chance at a very long life spayed/neutered than they do intact.  For whatever reason they were left inact it's better to spay and neuter.

I have never heard of a dog being to old to be spayed or neutered. Had a dog years ago neutered at 4 yrs of age.
He was fine, but he could still bred... u never seen anyone on the phone so fast. The vet assured me no pups would come of it, he was right.

I've never owned a male dog beofre, but I have heard that they still "mark" even though they are nuetered when older. But, i agree, never late then never!!!

My Sister has had many dogs retired from a career in breeding that have been neutered later in life.  One male was about 7 and he was a Newfoundland. Dilon was 4 when he was neutered.
1 1/2 years of age is young for a toy poodle and should be no problem to neuter.  If your worried have a full blood panel done prior to the surgery..although a neuter is a very simple procedure.[:D

Maska was neutered when I got him at 2 1/2.  He doesn't seem to miss them:-))

Indy was just neutered this month at 5. No problems and a very fast recovery.

Its never to late. Medically reasons would be the only reason to not undergo surgery. Which could come up in a very old dog. At a year and a half he's deffintily not old[:)].
