    Petco Trainer, URGH! (BlackLabbie)

I had a $10 off when you spend $10 coupon to Petco, so we went in today. The trainer came right over to me and Apollo and started in the super high (annoying) voice "Hi-ya there! You're a big boy huh?!", I was like OMG go away! She then started tapping her chest to get him to jump up on her and I said "he doesn't jump up on people, I broke him of that a long time ago" and she said in that high pitched baby-talk voice "Aw, its ok, my big doggie jumps on me all the time!" Ugh. So, I grabbed Apollo and said "ok, we're going to look around now". What'd she do? Followed me around the store asking a million questions about him (where'd I get him from? how old is he? does he nip like all the labs she'd "trained"? etc), then we got onto dog sports and I mentioned we do dockdogs now. She said in all seriousness, "I think that's cruel." and you should've seen my face, "Um, what's cruel??" "IDK what DD's is, but, if he's 7-ish those are his golden years. Don't you think he'd rather rest on a nice bed all day rather than be forced into a sport he probably doesn't even like?" I wanted to rip her a new one, and I did, I won't type it all out, but I put her in her place Amanda style, LMAO!!

Haha.  Good for you for putting her in her place.  Most of the trainers at those big box stores have no idea what they are talking about...unfortunately I know quite a few.

geeze... forcing a lab to jump into the water to retrieve their favorite toy? I dont think it gets much crueler than that. Poor Apollo Wink

It was just her choice of words, "cruel", that struck a nerve. BAD.
    • Gold Top Dog

Yeah, because we all know that you have to "force" a Labrador RETRIEVER to RETRIEVE something from water. And that's exactly why I would never recommend anyone to take their dog to the big chains for obedience training. I'm not sure what they require in order to become a dog trainer but I did watch a class once and saw the trainer reading out of a guide book while conducting class. Their classes aren't cheap either and if I'm going to spend money training a dog, I want it to be a class taught by someone who wasn't taught via a guidebook/video and actually has a clue about dog breeds, their breed characteristics and canine behavior.

Wow, you are just a horrible mom! Jeez, forcing Apollo to retrieve, what were you thinking?!

Yeah, I hate bringing my dogs to any place like that. People just don't get it, at all.

    • Gold Top Dog

Apollo is clearly being abused. I think you should send him to me, right away.

A big box trainer got Emma a bite record, so I feel your pain, LOL.

I really don't see anyone forcing Apollo to do anything. Especially not jumping into water and swimming around, sounds like a good time to me! And I hope when I'm 7 in dog years, I can do whatever I want, not just sit around on a comfy bed. Huh?

I haven't had the same experience with the trainers (I had to take Misha to Petsmart for his training, which was really stupid -- but it wasn't my money), but I've had volunteers try to corner and harass Misha because he's big, and *so fluffy* so they must touch him.

    • Gold Top Dog

Wow, you really are cruel. I can't believe you force your retriever to retrieve.

LMAO!!!!!  OMG, I was laughing so hard that I was crying!!!

I think that there must have been something in the air today.  I had an "interesting" conversation with a Petsmart "trainer" about Cher today.  Angry

I can't stand when I'm trying to browse and all I hear is, "sit, sit, sit, sit"-same dog won't sit yet they keep asking!  I've had to really force myself not to interupt and show them the correct way to get the sit.

    • Gold Top Dog

OMG! I can't stand it when people act like that!

Now I insist, nicely of course, you must type it out. Smile

Whenever I read this kind of stuff, I'm even more convinced that I am *worth* the extra that I charge over and above what the big box stores charge.  I only wish the owners who try to save money didn't have to come to me later, and spend twice as much to fix what went wrong when they let someone like this idiot (is there any other word for that behavior?) "train" their dogs.  Very disheartening...but glad she finally ran in to a savvy owner for a change;-)))  What is it about Labrador Retriever that lady doesn't get?  I have them trying to "dive" into the water bowls at play group, for cryin' out loud.

Yeah, bad dog owner.  That would be like me forcing Sequoyah to herd. Confused

Poor Apollo.  Getting to have fun and play in the water.  That must really suck.

Every time I take River into our local Petco, the trainer asks if he's a powderpuff.  I say no.  She says, Oh, we have one who comes in who looks just like him whose a powderpuff.  Ugh.  Really, they have a HAIRLESS powderpuff come in?  Neato.........
