    Dis one. I take her!!

    http://oakgrovepwds.blogspot.com/

She is 9 hrs from us......  1. I love pwd's.  2. I love that type of coat, even if it is 'improper"  Solution to my puppy fever?  ???

    • Gold Top Dog

    She's adorable!!!  Get her!

    • Gold Top Dog

Whoa! I had no idea Porties came in that coat! Too cute!

    • Gold Top Dog

    It's a cute puppy.

I would have reservations about a breeder who would, knowingly, produce pups with improper coats.  There's a DNA test available to insure that that doesn't happen, why wouldn't you test?  And yes, I understand that it's just a cosmetic defect, but I still would have questions.

The gene pool in PWDs is SO freaking tiny that frankly, I think it's irresponsible to eliminate otherwise good breeding candidates for a flaw that IS cosmetic.

    Cait's got  the answer.

I emailed her........... will see if it's meant to be now.

I didn't realize that the gene pool was that small.  I, personally, still wouldn't pursue it, but that's me.

    Shammy, fingers crossed for you!

Oh goooodness, if it isn't meant to be for some reason just send that cutie to me :p

In all seriousness, I hope she's the pup for you!

    • Gold Top Dog

That is odd.  They look like Flat Coated retrievers...in chocolate!  What a pair of cuties!

IIRC, it was something like 8 dogs left after the revolution in the early 70s? It's a VERY small number, and they've got two major genetic problems that affect significant portions of the gene pool (Addisons and a storage disease that I can't remember the name of). Lots of other weird health problems too. I LOVE the breed's personality but the health problems and the grooming scared me off. The Portie folks have a really progressive attitude twoards preserving what diversity they've got in their breed by using boys sparingly and breeding more than just the 'very best' pup out of any given litter.

Hershey kiss puppies!  Lordy, they are cute.

    Interesting about their gene pool.

I wasn't generally impressed by that breeder's web site.  In any breed with a small gene pool, it's much better to go with a breeder that is responsibly posting not just pedigrees, but evidence of genetic testing, history of the dogs working or show records, and the characteristics of the breed.  That site just says "they're pedigreed, have a look around" which, not knowing the breeder, is a big fat red flag to me.

If you want the name of a good Porty breeder who can refer you, I have one so PM me.

She is listed on the PWDCA website and the puppies parents were tested for GM-1 (storage disease), ofa, optigen, cerf and jdcm (heart disease).  Both parents are champions and out of other, older breeders.  this gal is new, been in the dog world about 5 years. She sounds like I was when I was showing/breeding bichons and poodles.

I dunno. I got a reply from her this morning and told to call her, so I will ask all the pertinent questions.  The pup may be improperly coated and incorrect for the breed, but she is what I was looking for.  I love the pwd temperament but not really looking forward to the grooming. I keep my bichon girls quite short and I'd end up doing that with a pwd wavy or curly coat too.  This seems to be a compromise.  The nice silky coat would wash/air dry and then brush occasionally to keep the shedding down.

Thanks, you guys, for looking out for me Embarrassed

Well, if you don't want to groom a Porty, you can always get one of these: http://www.lagottous.com/

    Smaller. Wink

Being listed on the association page isn't necessarily an endorsement.  I'm glad the parents are tested, but just hope you will be careful.  It really sounded as thought this person was just breeding her pets together.
