stupid ticks

    stupid ticks

don't have time today to take Molly for one of her long walks (got a shelter fundraiser to do this afternoon). So this morning DH and I took her for a shortish walk on our road. We didn't get too far when we noticed probably 6 ticks on her leg. Upon inspection/removal we discovered many many more.
So there we stood, on the side of the road, removing about FIFTEEN ticks off her. We kept inspecting on the way home. Got home and raked her and found even more!!! And now and then we find another crawling on her.
Nothing like those goatlicking blood-sucking parasites to wreck a nice relaxing walk.
She's protected with Frontline Plus but I want them off pronto.

Once we took a walk in the woods in late February.  I thought it was still too early to be tick season, so they weren't on Frontline.  But when we got back to the car and started looking for ticks, we found 50+ ticks! per dog!  I live in New England, where there's usually 3 feet of snow on the ground in February, but 'cause of the crazy weather we got ticks instead of snow. [:@]

I'm in New England also (New Hampshire) and yes the mild winter has made the ticks horrendous this year. We were getting them as early as late April

    Hi Mary,

The ticks are WICKED BAD (as we say in Massachusetts) in New England this year, for sure.  It's one of the good things about having two white poodles, I can spot a tick on them immediately.  I don't frontline them because it is so easy to find the ticks on them.

It has recently come to light that alot of the ticks in our area not only carry Lyme disease, but also a disease called erhlichia (sp).  My vet now does a test in spring and fall that checks for Lyme, erhlichia, and Heartworm.  I think it's a $35 well spent, as erhlichia can be deadly if not caught early.

So, get out the Frontline and check with your vet about whether or not this disease has shown up around your area.

The ticks here never stopped all winter, and I was treated for Lyme disease in February.  I had a tick dug into my shoulder and there was a bright red rash around it.  The doctor didn't wait two weeks to test, he just put me on doxycycline for 3 weeks.

I still haven't gotten up to Lincoln in AGES, but am actually planning on being up in that area for a few days in late June, I'll pm you about that as the time draws near.

look forward to hearing from you - taking Molly out on the access road with her pup friend this morning (near Sandwich Notch Road).
I've been frontlining her faithfully this year.
Sadie was also easy to spot ticks on with her white coat. Knocking on wood I've personally been tick free for awhile. Must be the frontline I put on my neck LOL
didn't do it but considered it [8D] my vet said if I don't mind that greasy feeling it'd be fine LOL

I'm an "old" New Englander and I still use Old Woodsman.  Nothing and nobody wants to get within ten feet of you with that stuff on.  I spray it on a bandana around my neck and coat my socks with it and then wear long pants, long sleeves, and a Old Woodsman coated hat when out in the woods.  I'm quite a sight (and smell).

Since I live in Mosquito Central, I'm intrigued. What's Old Woodsman?

Actually, the brand name is Ole Woodsman, here's a link:

    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Ole+Woodsman&btnG=Google+Search.

I haven't got a clue what it's made of, I never dared to read the label, but if you are living in Mosquito Central, you may want to give it a go.  But, I'll warn you, it's not for those who may thinkg that Skin So Soft is a mosquito repellant.  This stuff is serious and it is strong, goodness don't ever get it on your lips or in your eyes!!!  But, if you're into deep woods and deep mosquitoes, you can't live without it.

For a number of years, I paddled the Allagash River in Maine, from Chamberlain Lake to Fort Kent, 100 miles in June.  Mosquitoes and black flies like you can't imagine.  The only thing that made life tolerable was a Ole Woodsman bath every morning.

Strange, here we hardly have any ticks (we live in the eastern time zone of the U.S.) probably sinc this is the first year we have Bruno. We've only had 2 ticks on him; both in tick season. But we've never had that many! Strange...

Ahhh I just had to vent here too when I read this post!
I live in Northern NH and boy I can't get control of the ticks this year... we frontline plus the dogs and cats and check them faithfully (but they are black :( ) and they are EVERYWHERE! I'm amazed that they still latch on and bite with the Frontline. I've found them walking up my wall, and even in my BED these past few weeks.

MaryNH.. we just hiked the Flat Mountain Pond Trail the other day and were swarmed by flies and mosquitoes and ticks... familiar with it? It's a beautiful hike but this year it is miserable....

I've had success with "Herbal Armor".... I did a comparison on that hike between that and and heavy on the DEET formula and they both worked about the same.

    ack anything with 8 legs I despise.....but ticks.....double ack!
I'm in S. Carolina, in an area where you can have a tick on you so tiny , I have freckles that are bigger. I'm talking pinpoint sized.

My dog caught erlichia, she was treated, another dog that crossed over in 2004 had it , he was treated. The vet told me with erlichia, you can't really tell the dog is sick, till they start to hemhorage (sp?) through their nose, and by then it's about all over.

And that's why I really like Advantix better than Frontline , the ticks just don't seem to get on the dog...whereas with Frontline you may find an occasional dead tick, but I don't want them on her - or me - to start with.

And I have Lyme disease....and I can promise you....that is something you do not want to deal with!
