y lab mix ate two rib bones...help

hello to all.  i am brand new here and very excited to find such a great board.

i have a prob i think too.  my lab mix that i rescued from the pound, got a hold of two rib bones.  they were left by my visiting mother on the kitchen table.  this was 9 days ago.  he is still eating and drinking.  he doesn't have bloody stool.  he isn't whining or looking at his abdomen.  he still acts like he wants to play.  but he keeps coming up to me and just STARING.  like he wants to tell me something.

my question is..what warning signs should i look for?  there are a million sites that say not to let your dog have these bones but none to say what to watch for.  the bones were cooked, they were from chili's.

    can anyone help?

IMO all you need to watch out for are a lack of appetite, vomiting, and not being able to pass stools.  I have seen dogs that have had to have surgery from eating bones.  Most dogs will be able to pass these without any problems though.

First of all, welcome!  You are going to love it here.
Second, let me tell you about my first dog.  Back in the day when I wasn't as educated about dog life I used to feed my lab mix rib bones all the time.  They never bothered him a bit until he got old, and then he would puke them up.  After going to a resaurant my hubby and I would bring home a doggybag full of rib bones from Tony Romas and Samson would eat them like potato chips.  I would say we did this about once a month for many years.  I bet your dog is in fact trying to tell you something, probably saying 'thanks and love ya for the ribs!' lol  If you are still worried, call and make an appt at the vet's office or try for a phone consult.  You're the mommy, what does your gut tell you?  Not every dog could tolerate rib bones, but my dog sure had no problem snarfing them every chance he got.  He also loved stinky cow hooves too.   Let us know how it goes.  :)  Jules

Did he chew the bones at all before he swallowed them?  Our gsd got hold of a rib bone once because someone left the trashcan open.  He wasnt affected at all, but I still wouldn't feed him cooked bones intentionally.

I think the big thing you have to watch out for is chicken bones.  They splinter easily and can get caught in the dog's intestines.  Our vet told us that they've had to do surgery on dogs whose intestines were cut open because of chicken bones.

Since your dog is fine after 9 days I wouldn't worry too much about it.

He's just asking you for more [:D]
Most dogs love RAW meaty bones and have no problems digesting them.
My Cavalier was chomping up Raw chicken necks at 8 weeks old. Nearly four now and still has a couple of necks for breakfast. Keeps his teeth clean and anal glands empty.

Cooked bones of any kind can splinter and cause serious injury. But sometimes you just get away with it.

Though I wouldn't do it on purpose!

Sounds like he must have passed them okay. [:D]
