My dog is afraid of the ceiling fan!

My dog is afraid of the ceiling fan!

Well,  Dakota is 14 months old now and she's great but yesterday we discovered that she is deathly afraid of the ceiling fan in our living room!  This is difficult because it's the main source of cool air in that part of the house and I don't see us getting through the summer without using it regularly.  But Dakota refuses to stay in the room - she cowers in our bedroom or in the kitchen and even when we turn the fan off she still is weird in the room, keeps looking at the fan etc.  It's just odd because she's not really afraid of much else - just the vacuum.  Any ideas on why?  The fan doesn't even make a noise...  And, also, we would really like to relax with our dog in the living room this summer...any ideas on how to calm her fears? Oh, also: she was not afraid of any of our standing fans last year - where did this come from?

Willow is totally afraid of anything over her head.  We live right down the street from a baseball field and walk around it all winter but as soon as spring comes and they put flags with the players on them up, that's it until the fall!

She doesn't like trees, stop signs, over hangs on buildings, satelite dishes, umbrella, shower curtain, any kind of utility truck that has a bucket to go up poles and also those trucks that lift the dumpsters up, very scared of those!

I'm not sure what you could do, Willow also doesn't like being in any room where the window is open and blowing the curtains or blinds (turns them into blowing flags, LOL).

    Just wanted to empathize, [;)]

Is she only afraid of it when it's turned on?  Maybe you can try slowly getting her used to the fan, like first spinning the fan with ur hand, then turning it on low, then medium, etc.  I don't know if that'll help...  Or you could invest in one of those window AC units - way cooler than a fan.

I actually have a ceiling fan phobia myself...  A few years ago one of the blades on the ceiling fan in my bedroom almost fell on me when it broke off the fan.  Luckily the fan wasn't on, but it still gave me a really big scare.  Ever since then I've been kinda uneasy around ceiling fans, and I absolutely refuse to sit under one.
