"If we can't have the dogs chained to the tree, what's the point of having them?"

    • Gold Top Dog
If someone grew up thinking that a dogs place is outside, why cant that opinion be changed?

Heres my question : If the options are tied out to a tree 24/7 or giving it up to a shelter why have a dog anyway?

You obviously cannot bond with the dog while its tied to a tree 24/7 because if you did and the law made you take it inside, you wouldnt dream of taking to a SHELTER of all places instead... Hmm thats not a real relationship IMO.  Just as you think dogs are supposed to be outside, I think they should be able to develop a stong bond with their owners, its in their nature to do so.... and I think the lack of that ability is a terrible thing for them.

I do not think you should have a dog if it is chained every day all day. Just because you go visit the dog 2-3 times a day and play for 10 minutes does not make you a good owner. You are being selfish and are keeping the dog just for you to look at and to say you Have a dog. A dog should be played with and exercised as much as if you had children. I can see if it's for  a while while you have to run out. but not a daily EVERY DAY ALL DAY thing. That is just stupid. People don't understand how it changes a dog being kept like this.

The 2 dogs across and down the road, are chained 24/7. I have NEVER seen them loose. These dogs are dangerous and mean. They would kill someone. I am not exadurating the story. We have been told by the owner to run if the dog happens to get loose.  The animal conroll was called out and said the dogs were fine because they hated heated houses for the winter and an access to the air conditioned garage in the summer. That's BULL. These dogs could get loose and kill my children.

People think they are great owners and know no different. No dog should be chained for it's life.

I'm sorry I don't know which comment your rant is referring to - but I didn't make any statement that was an absolute or even a generalized one. I said "any dog in almost any situation" if that was even the one you were referring to - and I do believe that any dog could be negatively affected by being outside 24/7 - an opinion that is backed up by a lot of evidence, both anecdotal and scientific.

Definately agree.  Go to the website of just about ANY reputable breeder and send them a puppy request stating that the dog will spend most of it's time (20 hours a day IS most of its time) and see what kind of reponse you get.  99.9% of the breeders would give you the "no thank you-look somewhere else."  Why do you think that is?  Is it because they think that tying out is just such a dare good idea, or is it because they do not think that such a situation would make a good home for their pup?  There are some breeders who make you sign a contract that states that the dog will never be tied to an immoveable object.  Are these breeders ALL animal rights wackos?  Or could this be because they know something about dogs?

If a pit bull owner would rather rehome their dog to a good indoor home rather than not tie them out GOOD.

I personally feel this law will do very good in protecting these dogs left tied to a tree or anything for there lives. A dog is not just something to be left outside without human interaction. We do have a kennel that we bought for the pups to go out in for normally only 1hr at a time because personally its just too hot for them to be left out any longer than that and they do have a shade tree over the kennel an also we are going to buy a cover for it to provide extra shade. I would never leave any pet outside. I want them to be in the house with us an be part of the family they are our children as some may have skin kids would you put them out on a chain surely not well to me there is no difference. I also work with Pointer Rescue fostering an also am an adoption coordinator I would NEVER Approve a home to someone that told me they would leave the dog outside on a chain or in a kennel for its life or majority of.

Yup some lady was at the shelter the other day asking to look at dogs and I asked her if it would be inside or outside and she said ouside because she was allergic!!!!!![:@]  Why then, are you here?  And so I can expect to see you back returning it in a few months?

Anyway, it was great to be able to tell her "Im sorry, but we are not going to be able to help you, we dont allow our dogs to be adopted out unless they will live inside"  She then said "well, I will let it in if it gets hot"... Nope, even the director had to come out and tell her no.

Woooooooooo Hoooooooooo for the new law.
I wish we would pass this law here, especially for the back of the pick up truck, I have seen many animals hurt and killed from doing this. I live in the south and it's still leagal for kids to ride in the back of trucks as long as you arent on the interstate. Makes me so angry...........

As for the tied to trees, my grandparents always did this when I was a kid, I never thought anything of it. They always had german shepherds who were also agressive, I cant help but think being tied out had a lot to do with their agression.

I think now looking back why not build a pen, or dog run, or fence in an area.
They lost two dogs in a span of 15- 20 yrs to lightening striking the trees and killing the dogs.

I have to wonder how good a dog would be as a *guard* dog if he's chained to a tree outside.  If he's outside and bored he probably barks a lot, and if the property is fairly good sized and the windows are closed there's a possibility nobody would hear him.  And he certainly couldn't chase a burglar down if he's chained to a tree. Max, on the other hand [:D] would be totally worthless as a guard dog.  He doesn't bark when someone comes - he goes to the door and waits for someone to scratch his ears so he can lick them.

Mary P you keep going back to that's how my mother's mother did it etc. Well when you know better you do better, years ago when you had a fever they used to Sweat it out of you!, put butter on a burn! We now know that dogs need to be with their people and IMHO your mother and father are missing out on all good things dog. Never mind the life that dog has.

When my mom and dad were still married we had a kennel run outside for our dogs to be in during the day and they came in as soon as my dad got home from work. They had shade, they had a dog house, and my dad was waiting for his buddy to build another for the second dog, even though the one we had was big enough for both. We left to go drag racing one day and when we came back we found one dog laying in the door way of that big dog house, and the other dog laying just outside of it DEAD from heat exhaustion because the other dog wouldn't let it in the dog house. Just because there is shade doesn't mean it's still not hot. My dad never forgave himself and the remaining dog spent a lot more time inside after that.

When they divorced we moved in with a man my mom knew who had the "no pets in the house" rule and had his own dog chained outside and never let it off that chain. He expected us to chain our dog too, but after a week we had my dad come pick her up because my mom refused to let that dog live on a chain her whole life. The man, who later became my step dad never did relent and kept his gorgeous Malamute on a chain his whole life, I use to feel so sorry for that dog but I was a kid and couldn't do anything about it. He used the reason that we had horses and rabbits and the dog would do something to them.

So, for many years of my life I saw dogs chained outside and that was how it was. Are my dogs chained outside? NO!! Only when I am in the front yard working in the flower beds since there is no fence up there. My dogs are indoor dogs, which is where I feel they belong.

My dad has dogs now and they are indoor dogs too. Why keep a dog if you don't make it your companion, your best friend, and a member of your family. If a dog is chained up outside in hot weather, I can almost guarantee you that the owner would not spend much time outside with it bonding.. they're going to be indoors in air conditioning, where dog wearing a fur coat in 90 degree weather should be.

Ok, this is my last post to this thread...apparently there are people here that have no clue what its like to be in a situation like I am, where you can not have your dog in the house, and therefore are only going by "what they have seen" about dogs being tied out.  And apparently, they are only looking at the "bad" things with these dogs other than the good....like my grandfathers dog that is tied out, and is used to stand watch -notice i didnt say guard- over his biuldings.  Or like my dog, that had the worst possible life for any dog in the world when he wasnt tied out. But, enough about that....I was originally going to post on the "behavior issues" that being tied out causes....let me see.....I have had dogs, all my life...I grew up with dogs.....all total, my family and I have had many many dogs....most of which have been tied out.  NONE of those dogs, not the German Shepard, the Chow, the Doberman, Rotteweiler, Pitt Bull, or the countless muts have EVER had a behavior issue.  i have a 6 year old daughter, and am more than comfortable letting her play with ANY of these dogs.  But, I do know of a few dogs that do....like my neighbors dog....she keeps the dog in the house all the time, except to potty.  And that dog is terrified of people.  Why?  Because this is a "housedog" a dog that doesnt get outside unless it has to shit.  The dog runs barking and growling at any person or animal it comes in contact with, and even her owners will tell you its because she isnt a "social" dog.  And a friend of mine...she has a rather large dog.  Always in the house...again, unless it has to potty, and the dog has absolutly no idea what a real dog should do.  It sets in one spot, or lays behind a chair, when people walk in...because it is not socialized.  Now on to the kennels.....I know a man that is a very prominent business man in our town.  In fact, I am buying a horse from him.  Anyway, he has mega bucks, and lots of property...all fenced in.  However, he has his Boxer in a kennel.  Beside the barn...away from the general public, and the publics view.  This poor dog only gets fed when I or one of his helpers does, it , and is NEVER let out of the kennel.  He has no toys, nothing soft to lay on, and very little shade.
Now...a dog is not subject to behavior issues just because of where you "keep" it.  They are subject to behavior issues because of how they are raised and treated.
This law is ignoring the dogs i mentioned in this post that are "housedogs" or kept in a kennel, and is targeting those of us that do love and care for our dogs, but dont have another option.  Like I said before...that is a form of prejudice, and NONE of you hypocrites on here can argue with that!

angl, you have mentioned that you are currently in a situation where your dog cannot be in the house.. but what I haven't seen, and I may have missed it.. Is this your ideal situation for your dog? After you move to a place of your own, will you continue to chain your dog?

As far as a dog being aggresive because it's not a social animal becuase it's a house dog.. that's the owner's fault for not socializing the dog.. it's not the dog's fault for living indoors. The two have nothing to do with each other. The dog is not aggressive because it lives inside, but because the owner didn't take the time to socialize their dog. The examples you gave are people who don't socialize or exercise their dogs, which in a lot of cases is what people who chain dogs fail to do. I am NOT saying that all dogs on chains are abused or neglected, but it's a known fact that most dogs on chains don't get the socialization or training they need.

Wow. I'm not sure why you call us hypocrites but whatever.

A lot of people on this board do rescue. A lot work or volunteer at shelters. They see the effects treatment like this has on dogs. They take in the hundreds of dogs that are turned over due to aggression and general temperament issues. Many of those dogs were out on chains or otherwise neglected their whole lives.

I'm glad your dog is well taken care of. I'm glad you've had such good luck with the other animals you and your family have had. You are obviously not the typical owner who chains their dog. If you were, cities would not feel laws like this are necessary. They have to do what they feel is right for the good of the animals.

    Huh?
I really don't know why you call us hypocrites or what your point is .
I am sure that if found statistics of how many house dogs are screwed up from lack of socialization compared to how may dogs are screwed up that are chained outside 24/7, it wouldn't even be close.

I dont see what caused you to be so defensive about your love for your dog... hmmmm.

Anyway, if you cant see that all we are saying is dogs would be happier inside in the ac/heat, on carpet, with you than outside in the heat/cold, rain, and alone... I dont know how to convince you of that.  You seem to be doing more defending than anything.  I hope for your sake no one torments or poisons your dog, I hope he doesnt mind the rain heat or cold, and I hope hes not too lonely.  Thats my concern for all dogs outside.  If you feel you are different and your dog has the best life it can tied to your tree, whatever, Im just saying I think it gets better for them.  No one said you dont love him so I dont see your need to defend your love, we said its not the "best" thing.  Thats a fact, its NOT the best thing or why would this law have been put in place...

I am also wondering what you mean hypocrite...?
