Most energetic breed of dog?

    • Gold Top Dog
I hear all the time about Aussies being high energy. My guy is just as Becca describes her BCs. After his morning run (1.5 - 2 hrs) he sleeps the rest of the day. Many days I have to coax him out for an evening walk!

In my experience I vote JRT and BC's, but I definitely don't think they are alone.. there are a lot of really energetic dogs out there!  [:)]

Agreed, and I think it depends what is meant by "energetic."  Are you thinking about bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, never stop moving, frenetic energy? Or ability to go for miles/hours without wearing down?  'Cause Roscoe can go forever without slowing, if it's something he wants to do (outdoor adventures).  But if you met him at our house, you'd think he was the laziest slug dog on the planet.  He barely moves the tip of his tail in a greeting wag once he's curled up on the sofa for a nap, and every once in a while he'll raise an eyebrow.  [8|]

Um I think you are all forgetting the obvious here.  Huskies...

I think there are two kinds of energetic (at least).

Any little dog that can bark piercingly ALL DAY, sure seems energetic to me! Sometimes I wonder who would THEM up![:D]

The most hyperactive dog I've ever had was definitely a JRT I caught and babysat for two weeks. We loved him, he was totally hilarious but he NEVER stopped moving. (His owner was out of town and the person 'taking care' of him, didn't, and let him run away.)

Huskies, but really, SLED DOGS (who are all mixes by the way) can all run and run and run and go for miles. I mean, that's what they are supposed to do! Just fyi: contrary to movies and such, 99% of mushers don't run purebred dogs on their teams. Sled dogs' bloodlines are closely followed by serious mushers, a good, proven sled dog can go for several hundred dollars. They are working dogs, and their abilities and temperment are most important. (Border collie people know what I'm talking about.)

I'm not saying no one runs purebreds, but those aren't the teams you see in the Yukon Quest or Iditarod serious competition.

Oh, and I'm not saying huskies aren't energetic, no way! They can be real cuckoo-heads! The need lots of room to run!

Gordon setter!  will try to attach photo here.

Forgot to say why a Gordon Setter.  Gordons can go all day in the country. They have great stamina.  My Gordon can wear out my Mom's Australian Shepard.

I'll pit my working style Aussie against your Gordon any day...[sm=rotfl.gif]
She absolutely never quits unless we're in bed sleeping.  But, I admit that if your Gordon can outlast an Aussie at all, that's a busy Gordon!

To me energetic means a dog that is ready for anything and can go for hours but its controllable

    Bouncy "gotta-go-gotta-go-pant-pant-pant" is what I call wired[sm=rotfl.gif]!!!

So the most wired dogs I have ever met are a border collie, a JRT, a lab/retrieverX, a beagle and a whippet/australian cattle dog mix.  But I think its very interesting to note that all of these dogs are totally untrained and lack physical and mental stimualtion not to mention socialization.

The most controllable energetic dogs I have met are a GSP, a husky mix and Dodger (American Foxhound).  But again, all of these dogs have a lot of physical and mental stimulation and of course tons of socialization and training.

So I think that how energetic your dog is/seems depends on you almost as much as what breed they are.

I agree about the JRT's - I have never had one but have spent time with some.  Following the above definition of a controllable dog, it was the golden retriever/red setter cross I used to have when I was a teenager.  She would just go and go - and once came out of some bushes having "retrieved" a skunk.

See... that's why I wasn't thinking of JRTs like most everybody else was. The JRT I live with is quite controlled. She's been well socialized and trained since she was an itty bitty puppy, and gets a walk of two + miles at least every other day, along with other playing and running. I don't meet many dogs that get that kind of stimulation, so I can't say that they're truly energetic, or just bored out of their brains.
    • Gold Top Dog
well, true, many dogs can happily run all day; but they do rest inbetween chances to run. I know many JRT's that live in barns. The other barn dogs are often seen lying around sleeping, yes, even border collies and pointers. The JRT's are always on the move, running around looking for things to kill. You never see one just sleeping in the shade.

Well Dasher gets a ton of socialization and excersice.  I guess to me, I say JRT are very energetic not because he is out of control, but because he can go for hours.  While some JRT can be out of control because they are bored, the ones I have met (besides Dasher) have been barn dogs and agility dogs.  Both of which get plenty of excersice yet still are very energetic but not out of control.

I would also consider a Dalmatian as a high energy breed as my Dal could run for hours with no problems.  I think that the same can be said for most bird dogs as well.  They tend to have stamina.  But I don't associate "high energy" with being "out of control" either.

Spiritdogs -  LOL  I'll give you that !  My Gordon would not stand up to my brother's Aussie.  Well, maybeeeeeeeee.. NAH...My mom's Aussie mix  is an overweight 7 year old.
