Chewing at paws

    Chewing at paws

Boomer has recently started chewing at his paws.  We noticed that the hair in between his paws were long and just took him to the groomers to get cut. She mentioned that he's not chewing his actual paws but instead chewing at the fur because it was matted (he's a cocker/poodle mix).  I've tried to stop him from chewing at his paws when I see him do it but is there another way I can deter him from doing this? Since I'm not with him 24hrs a day i'm sure he's doing it while i'm not home.  Hopefully since he's got his paws trimmed he'll stop it.

My labs doing the same thing and now I remember that it's about this time last year that she started doing it all the time.  We took her to the vet last year and she had a yeast infection.  I found that rinsing off her feet with a solution of black tea helped quite a bit.  I just made up some tea (a bit stronger than I'd drink it) and kept it in a squirt bottle.  I believe the tannins in the tea help clean and quite the skin irritation.  Basically it's an allergy problem with my lab though, but might be the same for you.

It might also be a pollen reaction this time of year - I think there was another post on that, and I had called our vet who also recommended rinsing (he said with water, but I am pretty sure the tea was in the thread I am thinking of)...
