Has anyone every changed the name of a dog they got?

Edison was named "Larry" (ick) when we got him from the shelter, but he was only a puppy so it didn't matter too much.  He didn't seem to know his name at that point anyhow.

Ash (my cat) was named "Salem" when we got him from the shelter, but I had a cat named Salem when I lived in Italy that I had to give up when I got orders to Korea, so that brought back too many sad memories.  Again, he was only a kitten, so he didn't know the difference.

We didn't change Millie's name, because she responded to it, but we did change Max's. He was called Bruno at the shelter. He was picked up as a stray, and he was only in the shelter about a week I think, so he didn't really know the name. Plus, we didn't like it (for him) and it doesn't sound nice with Millie. Millie and Bruno just don't sound like they're from the same family, but Millie and Max- definitely related.

Edited to add: It used to get confused when I went to look for Max's petfinder listing in the Shelter's Happy Tails, because I would always look for Max, but he was listed as Bruno. I solved the problem by adding the pictures to my kodak gallery album.

Max came from the shelter and they had named him *Mookie*- his pic was going in the local newspaper as shelter pet of the week and they think giving the dog a name to go with the pic makes it a little more personal. He was only in the shelter for 10 days when I snagged him & he was about 3 to 5 mo. old so I'm sure he already had a name from his previous owner. [:D] Getting his 3rd. name didn't seem to cause him any confusion.

When I had adopted Cookie, the shelter had named her Hannah. She was two months old at that point and I just felt Cookie would be a better name for her. She responds to it, only when she wants to, of course. [;)]

Doesn't matter what names my 2 dogs have they respond to just about anything apart from their own names when it suits [:D] buster is often called monster and bengi is called bendy as he seems to bend in the middle when he wags his tail in excitement lol.

I have changed Crusher's name.  I used to be Nanook, but i thought that was too common for a husky.  My Pint, is actually Cinders, or Cinderella, or Princess, or My Pint Sized Princess.  She answers to all of them.  I think its really my voice she answers to.

When Susie came to us she was "Glory"...but my hubby had a negative connotation with that name...

Haha your hubby wouldn't happen to be Glo would he?  One time when we were in high school, we were helping to "bounce" at a friends party, and we decided to charge a fee to get in.  The fee entailed pouring a shot of whatever they were drinking into a big thermos for us "Bouncers" to drink afterward.  We called it Glory.  My buddy Glo was the only one to try it and it did not stay down at all!  Oh Glory was a common phrase after that.

I changed my adopted dogs name slightly. From Cassie with a short A sound to Casie, with a long A sound. She did not respond to her name when I got her anyway. She used to be tied outside 24/7 with little or no attention. And it sounded to close to my other dogs name and seemed to confuse them both. She learned her name in a hurry with no problems.

I change the name of most dogs I get, unless they've actually come to know their name... Eevee was Babette (YUCK) and Shippo was Gizmo... lmao...

Yup.  Mia was Meeka when we adopted her. We called her Mia-Meeka for a few days and then dropped the Meeka...

My dog's name is C.J., but she's a girl, so it's kind of weird... My brothers used to call her 'Hanes' because of her white socks, but it didn't work well, and the rest of us refused to call her that (naming a dog after underwear? Just wrong.), so they've given up. Meh, I probably wouldn't have named her that, but I don't wish to have the hassle of a middle-aged dog adjusting to a new name.

Bear's shelter name was Shadow, which I changed because my neighbor has a dog with that name.

Zoe had two names for some reason.  On the internet, she was listed as Lauryn and in the shelter she was called Snowflake.
