Depends on what you mean by change? You mean the REGISTERED name, either on the puppy paperwork by whiting it out (big no-no), or asking the AKC to change it? This cannot be done without the breeders written consent with AKC.

If you mean the "call name" well sure I've changed those! When Susie came to us she was "Glory"...but my hubby had a negative connotation with that name and it's not really a "name" to me either so we swapped it to Susie. She never answered either one so she didnt mind lol!

Yeap, my gal was a rescue that was found as a stray, so nobody claimed her they didn't know her name so they gave her one, but to me it didn't fit her so we gave her a different name, she was 2, she picked up on her new name very quickly I have to say.

We got Odin from a shelter and they had given them the name "Macklin". When we brought him home, we just started calling him Odin and giving him treats whenever he looked at us. After 3 months, he'll come to his name most of the time--when he wants to. [;)]

I meant their short name not registered.  Their common name[;)].

We changed rescued Indy's name from Red to Indy.

Our dog trainer actually recommends changing rescued pups' names.  She feels that the dogs may associate bad incidents/owners with their previous names, so she suggests that the new name sound nothing like the old one.

Indy was a bit thick though.  It took him a good couple of months to answer to his new name.

I changed the name of my adopted cat - he was called Gus at the shelter, but I changed it to Moose.  He comes to it (Moose), but then again, he must be part dog!

Had a dog named Sadie - she was Lacey for the first 7 months of her (previous) life.  She got used to it within about a week.

Daisy's origional name was "Sky" but the people that had her before me probably really didn't talk to her much because she didn't respond to it at all. So her middle name is Sky- Daisy Sky

I am always acustomed to a name with at least two syllables- it just flows off the tounge easier when you're calling them.

We changed our rescue's name. She was such a pup and had only been at the shelter for a few days after having been transported from out of state, so it seemed pointless to keep a name we didn't care for.

In his book A Dog Year Jon Katz decides at the end of the year to change the name of his troubled border collie, on the advice of a trainer. The dog had been returned by one owner to its breeder and Katz and the trainer felt it may have been mistreated and needed a break with its past, including a new name.

Toka was named by her rescue Sasha.  I found it wishy washy and she didn't even slightly respond to it, so I changed it. Is there some reason dogs listed as Spaniel mixes get names Sasha?

I let the cat keep her name as she does actually come to it, and responds without any negative reactions.

Maddi's name was Peanut at her breeders... but she didn't really know it (well, she didn't know anything at the time!). At first, to get her used to her new name, I called her Maddi-Peanut... it only took a day or two for her to understand her name was Maddi.

Zoe's name was Mia when she was brought to the shelter.  She looks nothing like a Mia.  She needed a name that ended with the eeeeeee sound.  I think she knew Mia but not well.  I called her Mia-Zoe for a day or so then just Zoe and she got it :).

Yeah, Roscoe was a stray and the people who found him called him "Blue" and then we changed it to "Roscoe."  It's easy to do - think about how many names your dog responds to anyway. You probably have a bazillion nicknames, right? [:D]

Oh, and Scout was "Cleo" at the shelter.  When we brought her home, I called her "Scout" and she came running over immediately. I like to think it's her true name. LOL!

Breeder called my dog Erin.  We renamed her April.

    Kota didn't have a name....just a number. [:o]

    Tasha was Yinny...  bleh...

Pepper was Floe.  Who names a dog Floe?  Talk about not wanting the dog to get adopted... sheesh...
