    Disturbing Behavior

A neighbor friend told me that the manager of the apartment community where we live told her that she's been stomping on the duck eggs that she finds in nests around the property!!!! She said she doesn't want anymore ducks on the property. I knew she was crazy, I just didn't realize *how* crazy... it seems like this would be illegal, does anyone know?? I wondered why I never saw any baby ducks last year. Now I know. :(

Ummm, wow.  Just wow.  And this person is in control of the lives of others??  Scarey!

I don't know if this is illegal or not.  It might depend on what type of duck eggs she is stomping.  Mallards were, and still may be, protected, but I don't know about other varities.

This person has a really serious mental issue........

Sounds like the manager has a problem that requires medication. I bet he does other things that could surely get him in trouble. If you can't get him on the ducks, watch for other things.

Ok. That just really makes me sick to my stomach to hear. What a friggin' Nutter. Maybe a local animal rescue or even the DNR could tell you what you can do about it. (I'd call the DNR first.) Let us know what you find out!

     WTF!?!

for some reason I feel like I'm gonna read a thread about how this same person set traps or decided to take up bow hunting.

    poor ducks.

I'm assuming they are muscovy ducks? if so - they are NOT protected under FL law, because they are not native and considered a nuisance.

I'll take em. lol always wanted duck. wanna name it 'puck the duck' LOL

This makes me really, really mad. How could someone be so cruel? Someone needs a serious reality check that they don't decide the comings and goings of the universe Angry Let's pray she doesn't have children to raise in the model of serial killers.

I'm doing some research for you, but Erica is right - if they're muscovy ducks, they are not protected.  However, they say you should shake the eggs vigorously to make them nonviable and return them to the nest so the hen doesn't lay more.  Stomping them seems incredibly distasteful to me.

    Edit to add:

68A-4.001 General Prohibitions--prohibits taking, transporting, storing, buying, selling, possessing, and wantonly or willfully wasting any wildlife or freshwater fish or their nests, eggs, young, homes or dens except as specifically permitted by rules in the Florida Administrative Code.

    • 68-5 Rules relating to non-native species

Now I need to go find the specific 68-5 Rules...

While I suppose that the manager could handle disposing of the duck eggs in a more discreet fashion, I really don't see what the problem is.

Apparently, there are already a number of ducks on the property, & the manager is attempting to control the population. I don't see a reason to fault her for that...

The only problem with shaking the eggs, & then leaving them in the nest is that they are going to sit there and rot.  Eventually, they are going to break, & the smell will, no doubt, be a source of complaints from tennants.  Of course, if she really is stomping on the eggs, then smell would still be an issue.

I wonder if anyone has actually seen her stomp on the eggs or if this is just "a friend of a friend of a friend" who "saw" it?

Agreed - I think if you take it upon yourself to control the population, that you are responsible to see it all the way through.  Having lived in FL long enough, I don't blame them for wanting to get rid of muscovy ducks (if that's what these were.)  If they're mallards, and this person really did destroy the nest, she's in trouble.

I like them - I've never had a problem with them being aggressive or destructive, but I can see where too many could be a problem. We had a bunch when I worked for the Humane Society that lived in our pond, and a year round family (grandma and everything!) at the rink I used to skate it. All friendly (although, I really like ducks!)

Some places will hire trappers to take them away. Maybe that's a more humane option for the property.

We have several breeds of duck on the property including Muscovy, Mallard and another type that I don't recognize.... I have reason to believe the source is reliable and it is not heresay. Being in property management for many years in Florida, the typical way to control the population is to have a trapper come out and relocate them. Yes, I've heard stories of trappers taking the ducks and rather than relocate them, consume them.... it doesn't thrill me at all. We do not have an overabundance of ducks here..... and there is a huge stocked lake in the middle of the property. Part of the charm of the property for many folks are the ducks..... yeah, sometimes I don't like being woken to their quacking, but I do like them. It's not like there is duck crap everywhere, in fact, I've never seen any on the sidewalks at all..... the dog poop issue is way out of control - all over the sidewalks and it seems no one (except for a very few dog owners) picks up after their dogs.

She could call Wildlife Services or the Pelican Man Bird Sanctuary and see if they would take the eggs and incubate them to hatchlings, etc....... there has to be some alternative other than to stomp on them...... remember, this is the woman who has made my and others lives a living hell. She is evil in every sense of the word.... I can just imagine her out there getting joy from stomping on those eggs, like a little kid. She is one of the most immature 50+ y.o. I have ever met. In fact, most people on the property think she's got untreated bipolar disorder because of her behavior

I was also told that one of the maintenance men sometimes takes the eggs and cooks them!!!! I don't know, to me.... it's just not normal behavior.

Yesterday a mother duck who had built her nest on a rooftop was walking her hatchlings along the roof line and the three ducklings fell down a downspout and got stuck. The mother was beside herself. Someone had called the fire dept and eventually they got them out. *Smart* mama duck to build her nest up high (normally they nest on the ground)...... I don't know where they ended up.... I'll check the lake today. I just hope the turtles or kids on the property don't get the babies.... They weren't Muscovy or Mallard, I'm not sure what type of duck she was, but I didn't recognize her markings - almost like a cross between the two......

I do want to report this. IMO it's not acceptable and *if* she is destroying nests of protected species, it needs to be known.

Mallards may be protected - I'm sure really sure. I would contact your local seabird sanctuary - and see what their advice is. I can give you the number of the group by me - but I'm not sure how varied the laws are from county to county

I mean she could also take them and eat them or sell them to people who'd eat them, IMO much more useful than adding to a population that might be considered a nuiscance by the City...in the case of the Muscovy.

I don't have an issue with controlling animal populations because it is to their benefit at the end of the day. My Mom ate the fertile eggs laid by their pair...cruel too I suppose? The chick dies before it's hatched either way.

I guess I am not seeing the issue if the species is not protected...other than the waste of a potential food item someone might want.
