    help!!!

Hi there, this is my second time on this board and I really like it.  You all seem to know what you are talking about, so here is my problem.  First off we have 3 dogs, one husky, and one malamute/shepard mix and our new puppy a Bernese Mountain dog.  The problem is with the puppy, she is eating her poop (sorry could not think of a better word).  It is really gross and makes her smell like poop ALL of the time.  I have made loud noises and told her no but she goes right back and does it again.  By the way she is 5 months old.  And this needs to stop.  Thank  you for your help!!!!!

There are a couple of things you can try, but ultimately you'll need to monitor her and be diligent about cleaning up the yard.

There are a few commercial products that you can try.  I know Fosters and Smith sells some, I'm not sure about other places.  Other ideas are to add fresh pineapple or low-sodium meat tenderizer to her diet.  The enzyme is supposed to make poop unappealing.

What are you feeding the dogs?  When my Lab eats a diet with a lot of grains he snarfs up poop like there's no tomorrow.  If he's on a raw diet or eating Evo he doesn't really bother his poop.  I also know some dogs who become poop eating fiends if they've had Greenies.  Since Greenies don't really get digested, apparently eating Greenie poop is like eating  a Greenie all over again.[:'(]

Being out in the yard with the puppy and cleaning up after every trip out will eliminate the chance for her to eat poop.  It may also break the habit of poop eating.  A worst case scenario would be to put a basket muzzle on her just for trips out to potty.  IMO all dogs should be comfortable wearing a muzzle no matter how friendly they are, since there are some situations where they may be muzzled no matter what and accepting the muzzle makes it less stressful.  But in this case, the basket muzzle with a cover on the end will make it more difficult for a poop eater to get what she wants - but not impossible!

Hehe, stick around and you will hear alot more of this and other words like it.

I agree with Calypso.  The best thing you can do is clean up right after them.  However one of my pups had this habit for a while too.  But only with my BF.  When she was out with him she would drop it and spin around and gobble it right up.  We couldnt figure it out because when I was out with her she would just drop it and come running to me for her treat.  That turned out to be the deciding factor.  I still celebrated everytime she did the right thing outside.  BF didn't.  Once he started again the behavoir stopped.

My best guess for you is just what has already been posted but address the cause first (diet) and quick cleanups second.  Animals like dogs and cats need a lot of protein but for some reason most people feed their dogs foods with lots of grains and fillers to make feeding cheaper than an all meat diet.  This leaves them craving protein and I bet your Berner could be in need of more meat in his diet.  I believe this is why some dogs graze in litterboxes too.  One thing I would suggest is reading the nutrition part of the forum, and read all the threads regarding feeding a *raw* meat diet.  I know, I know, it was freaky when I first read it too.  Dogs have the ability to handle ingested bacterias that we humans can not.  In years of giving my dog raw eggs, he has never had salmonella poisoning.  It takes some time to read/digest/accept the concept.  I myself am giving some serious thought to at least feeding my dog partly raw.  You'll find that the nutrition section is a real eyeopener.
Everyone's input regarding quick 'poop cleanups' is a must anyway, and so is acclimating your dogs to a muzzle which is a reminder to me that I need to go buy one, I haven't done that yet.
Use of the word 'poop' outnumbers proper words like feces by a vast margin.  We're a relaxed bunch of dog-freaks and we just tell it like it is :)  Boy does "POOP" happen.   [;)] Jules

Thanks everyone.  She is on Nutro Max large breed puppy food, which I think is supposed to be good.  I guess I will just have to pick it up right away, I like to wait for it to get a little bit harder before, but I would do any thing for her!!
