I am so mad!

Today I come home from work and DH tells me that our oven got fixed. (We rent but never ever hear from our landlord, I've seen him twice since we moved in last August). Appearantly the maintenance guy came by today with another man to spray pesticides in our apartment??!! They sprayed by the oven, by our patio door and by the front door of our apartment.
He told DH they do this every 2 months and they have been ever since we moved in here!
Why on earth was I never told???? Not only did I have NO idea that somebody was in our apartment while we were not home (thank goodness Joey is in his crate, not that he's not friendly but he could've easily escaped!) but they are spraying pesticides in places Joey always has access to! He could've easily been poisened!?!?!? How dangerous is this for dogs????

I had had a GS once get into some pesticides... it wasn't good. Good thing your pup didn't get into it... but probably after it's dry it wouldn't be as harmful, I'd think?

Hum, we rent and I was always under the impression that if they want to come in they need to let you know. So, I'd definately call the landlord and at least have him let you know next time so Joey can be removed.

Nadine, I think Lori is right. Unless it's a real emergency (a tub overflowing into someone elses apartment, a gas leak, etc.) I'm pretty sure they're supposed to give you at least a 24 hr. notice that they're coming in. At least, they should give the spraying schedule.

Have you checked the details in the rental agreement? Is there some fine print you missed or they snuck in? I don't think I would care to have people in my place when I wasn't home esp unannounced like that. How have you handled it so far? Jules

Ask them if the pesticides are safe for animals first! Then go to the landlord and ask why you were not told they had been coming in.

I'm sure the law is the same there as it is here. Your landlord could be charged for that. I'm sure you don't want to go there. But I would make sure they know to give you notice and that it was not okay for them to be doing this. I love my landlord, she is one of my best friends, but I would not like it if she was coming in or she had someone else come in. That is not right. And on top of it SPRAYING???? What if you were alergic? That is really terrible.

Check your lease it is usually in the lease, and it really is in the best interest of all tenants, if they were to skip one apt the bugs would just go over there. How many units in your building if it's over two I'm pretty sure it's in there.

They used to do the occasional spraying when we lived in married student housing years ago, and ALL the apartments had to be done so the critters wouldn't travel from one apartment to another. Pets (unless very small and in a cage) weren't allowed, so that wasn't an isssue but we were always notified about when this was going to happen so we could spend the day with a friend.

You had someone walk into your apartment with no notice when you weren't home?

I'd be furious with them. Especially for putting my pet(s) in danger. You really should talk with your land lord. Even if they have to do it, they should have given you notice.

Most pesticides these days are safe for dogs and cats unless they lick it ALL up and then some. I have our house sprayed every now and then because I HATE bugs inside my house. Every time, I ask the guys, is this safe for pets? Their reply is that the FDA wouldn't allow us to spray it if it wasn't safe for pets and children. As soon as it dries, which doesn't take long, it's perfectly safe. On top of that, it's diluted with water to be able to spray it so it's not as concentrated. Also, I hear it tastes very bitter, so one lick would probably stop them from continuing.

As for them coming in unannounced, I would be extremely surprised if that's not illegal. You have rights as a tenant to no unauthorized access unless it's an emergency and bug spraying is NOT an emergency.

Our home is sprayed monthly...here in GA it is to keep the roaches from sharing our home. They only spray at the edges of the rooms, which isn't a worry for the dogs. Never had a problem.

We own our home, but I remember when my MIL signed the lease for her apt that there was a clause saying that monthly spraying of the apt would be done and was part of the association fees. They always leave a recept on the kitchen counter, so she knows they have been there.
