Smartest dog

    Smartest dog

Here is a link which "scientifically" rates dog breeds upon intelligence/obedience.  The Chessie is tied for #27 along with the Puli and Yorkie.  Perhaps that explains our issues!?!

Rottweilers are number 9? I love my girl to death, but she's no rocket scientist.

Gosh, german shepherds are only # 3??  Best not tell them that.[&o]

It's ranking them by obedience, though. I'd say JRT are near the top of the list for intelligence, but they AREN'T a compliant breed. Some dogs are bred to work with humans and some are bred to work alone, and make decisions on their own, so... Isn't it hard to compare?

According to the link, its ranking them by the three following criteria:
    • Adaptive Intelligence (learning and problem-solving ability). This is specific to the individual animal and is measured by canine IQ tests.
    • Instinctive Intelligence. This is specific to the individual animal and is measured by canine IQ tests.
    • Working/Obedience Intelligence. This is breed dependent.

It's probably a crock, but it's fun though.

Dachshunds are #49 and I didn't even see JRT. Poor Emma.

Cairns are #35, I think my Cairn is smart, but not always compliant like the JRT.  Terriers are bred to work alone and not have to have commands for everything.  My Golden is Ranked #4, you could have fooled me, although if she wasn't so hyper, she would be able to listen better!

Hey guys it's "Based on a dog trainer's survey."

We all know how accurate surveys can be! Ha!

I never did even find husky, and of course no sled dogs (and they wouldn't have had mushers in the survey). Anyone who has ever left an unoccupied husky alone uncrated will know that they can get into DEVIOUS trouble!

They have elkhounds at #36, which I think is because few people have them so their survey won't reflect are incredibly smart and compliant they are.

Both huskies and elkhounds have exceptional adaptive intelligence, imho. Sofia has both in her. Then there is the coyote element....the most adapatively intelligent animal in North America.

As my boyfiend says: Sofia is inconveniently smart!
    (and that's no typo, [sm=happy.gif] )

Hmmm....Nigel has #7 & #9 together, and Sydney is #10 and #78.....not sure that is really all that accurate, she figures stuff out a whole lot faster than he does, as Jean says, "inconveniently smart"....[:D]

My two have figured out how to work together to get what they want... talk about INCONVIENIENT. Geez......

    Labs #7?
Understanding of New Commands: Less than 5 repititions - yes, so far this is true of Slick - but I SWEAR only because I use a clicker.
Obey First Command: 95% of the time or better:  HAHAHAHA!  If the command were "look away and pretend you don't know me" - then yes, he's at 100% right now.

Anyway, this is silly as far as I'm concerned.  So many variables - the skill of the trainer, the methods used, the dog's physical health, the dog's emotional health and geez the individual personality of the dog itself.

First I have to say poor Bunni, with 11 of them she doesn't stand a shot.
I have to tell you I was really shocked by Paps, for some strange reason maybe because I've always had big dogs, I was thinking little dogs little brain, I didn't think they would be smart. These dogs are really smart, Brando is the smartest dog I've ever had, and Trixie is up there.

I didn't even find shiba inu on that, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was near the bottom.  I've heard my share of trainers (on this site and other places) rant about untrainability of shibas!  Don't tell that to Tojo, though, he loves doing tricks.
    • Gold Top Dog
I've actually had trainers tell me that I couldn't come to their classes with an untrainable dog. That doesn't help the reputation of JRTs much, now does it? Of course, Emma can heel off lead, knows the difference in right and left, and all the basics plus a bunch. She even gets the phone. It was a lot of work, but she's a great dog..... And not at all untrainable, LOL.

Hey, how about training BOYFRIENDS? Now I wonder where they'd be on the chart!
