I am a stay at home mom and I'll tell you that I've tried various things and have found that I "earn" the most money by managing the household tightly and homeschooling versus putting the kids in private school. I have training as a teacher, a research and technical writer, an html programmer, and now as a dog trainer - but none of these careers has brought in as much money to the household as planning the budget carefully, bargain shopping, cooking at home (for dogs AND people), raising some of our food - plus adding a little to our actual cash flow with dog training or contract work, when it does not detract from these primary functions.
Otherwise, as someone who has dabbled in several different home businesses - if you don't have an "in" with someone offering contract work, your best bet is to go the entrepreneurial route or work with a sales from home company.
Figure out how to market what you are best at - contact the SBA in your area. There's a good many programs aimed at helping women and minority entrepeneurs (I am both, LOL).
Never invest household money until you are sure you can lose it, and never give money to anyone who promises you a "business in a box." There's plenty of organizations that you can get involved in that don't require money and give you lots of help getting started - Tupperware, Mary Kay, Amway, Avon, the list goes on.
It takes motivation and organization, but so does running a household, right? [
