    carsick dog

i want to take my adopted dog to the vet and grooming center, but her previous owner told me she gets carsick. i was just planning on putting her on the backseat beside me or on the floor, but then she supposedly will throw up. should i get one of those metal crates they put in the back of vans instead? how do i stop her from being carsick?

If it is only a ten minute ride to the groomer, I doubt you'll have any problems. You can get dogs used to riding in a car with short rides, then gradually upping the time spent riding in the car.

If you are concerned that your dog will throw up in your car you can always fgo for the crate you asked about or even a blanket or something to cover the seats.  I think I would work on desensitizing your dog.  I would also pay attention to whether it is just the movement that makes them sick or maybe it is upsetting to get in the car b/c this might change how you deal with the reaction.

Is she really physically carsick or is she frightened?
When she`s not just used to drive with you in the car, do as jean says. And take her to nice places first like a dog park or for a long walk so she connects something pleasurable with the car. Start with real short rides. Or you can start by feeding your dog inside the car, just something nice for her.

When she`s really  physically carsick there are some homeopathic treatments, you can ask your vet or alternative practitioner (I have some globules called 'nux vomica', they`re supposed to help)

The only way to get a dog from being carsick is to do little rides around your neighborhood. I used to cover the seats with a towel and bring along paper towels and a grocery bag or to. When she would puke I would grab it with the paper towel and put it in the grocery bag. I would put hem on my left between me and the door and when I heard it coming up I'd be ready. It only lasted for about a week if you do it once a day and you can pretty much do it with one hand, Also its best to not go for a ride right after they have eaten, you can plan that out accordingly! Good luck, your pup will be hanging its head out of the window in no time!

I'd like to add that giving treats to a carsick dog in a car isn't a good idea! LOL!

Bailey is VERY carsick!  She will throw up within 2 minutes, or say 2 miles from the house.  She trows up every time, never fails.  both ways there and home, and once it was 7 times in the same trip... I was very worried.  I just bring lots of towels and have her in the passenger seat and do the best I can to manage it while driving.  A guy at the pet store tld me rolling down the window for his carsick dog does wonders... Bailey ignores it... maybe you can try that..?

O BTW - the vet gave us some pills to giver her 30 min before the ride (and of course no food before) but they didnt do a THING![8|]
