ehhhh............this is one weird/ funny post I had read today......  [&:]

okay, that's  . . . . cool. This topic is a good one, I can get everything I need here about huskies and other stuff. [:)]

    Still memorizing those commands.

BTW, I'm looking for a new moderator for my site. One a little older than the two young teens that I have on there and needs to be active.

    . . . .

Does anyone know of any good dog name sites so i could look up some good names for my future dog?
    • Gold Top Dog
I don't like common names. I'm creative, but not at all when it comes to names. So any good name sites would be most helpful.

    Thanks.

    ORIGINAL: pumaward

    Gee: geese w/out the "se"

Hmm... I've always used Gee like the letter G...
    • Gold Top Dog
gee as in "jee" The letter g is pronounced as a j. That I learned from going to sled dog sites, etc.

Hook is short for "Brake and Hook."  This is because a musher sets a snow hook in place as a sturdy brake.

Hike is used to go because the word mush is too soft a sound when you are barking commands in a 20 mph wind.

    Haw means left.

These commands are favored because they are not used in everyday language. That way, you can carry one a normal conversation without accidently keying up a dog.

Hmm, that's funny because I watch a few sled dog things (it might have been a working dogs show?) and they pronounced it like geese... at least I thought... maybe I misheard?
    • Gold Top Dog
The dog probably doesn't care, either way, as long as you're consistent. A person could well use "hullaballoo" and achieve the same results.

I've said it before and I'll say it again...

Up in Fairbanks, where there are lots and lots of sled dogs, what you mostly hear is:

    Gee!
    Haw!
    Whoa!

    DAGNABBIT I SAID WHOA!!!!!!
    [:D]

(insert your expletive of choice for 'dagnabbit')

Well, these ARE indeed wonderful. You ought to post them in a folder of their own, not just part of this thread. I saw one, and very much enjoyed it and will go back to see the other.

    Welcome to the group!

I saw the links to the movies which was not exactly germaine to this thread. And I'm wondering what anal glands had to do with any of this.

There's also Over Gee and Over Haw which mean to move over to that side of the trail.  Its useful for passing other teams or being passed.  On By is used to get the dogs to ignore the rabbit on the side of the road, or the team they are passing.  It has been tried on squirrels but apparently has no effect.  Come Gee and Come Haw mean to turn right around to that side and come back the way you came.  So far Crusher has mastered... well he leaves his harness on now without too much fight.

I know a couple of mushers around here that just use left and right.  They also use Stop instead of Hook.  And Whoa is used for slowing to a stop which is useful when going down a hill and a dead stop will just get them run over by the musher on her sled.  Its like useing the back breaks on your bike instead of the front ones.

Ron my guess would be new pup that does not know the rules about hijacking threads.  They are kind of cute though.  They definately should have been in thier own thread though.

Now I'm going to be all confused, lol. I just have to copy ron's message and email it to myself to help me memorize the commands.

hmmm .. . . I'll have to look at those. I really don't like to watch movies, I'm kinda picky at which movies I like. I only like about three movies, some scenes in others.
