    Airport scanners.... It begins!

I'm not surprised, but honestly, someone seeing my body doesn't really bother me. What DOES bother me is the amount of money spent on these worthless machines, they will not stop a terrorist. If there is a will, there is a way.

lol one day all this being right business is going to give me a complex. LMBO.

Honestly, I'd rather be scanned than subject to a pat down. Due to things I've gone in the past, I DO NOT like being touched by people I don't know in general (though with people I know/comfortable with, I'm a touchy-feely type of person by nature). I'm really not sure how I would react to a pat down (doesn't matter if its done by a male or female) I'm not surprised this happened, it was only a matter of time but *shrug*...

Same here.  The explosive sniffing dogs are a good option too.  I have no problem getting up close and personal with a cold, wet nose. Big Smile I always fly Southwest and they don't leave the country, so I think it will be awhile before I have to deal with that.

    I can understand that.

When I was patted down it was fairly quick and much like something you would go through went entering a concert. I think it has to be done by a member of your sex. I would not be open to a pat down from a male. (Unless they were super hunky... then maybe) Wink

Just don't do what I did and joke about being relieved you made it through security. Zip it!

No doubt they'll pass any costs related to customer or employee lawsuits, down to the customer. Gotta love new technologies lol.

I toldya - it started in Boston Logan last month.  Friends who are pilots are not happy because of how many times they will be exposed to the radiation.  I mean, we all think of it in terms of passengers, but imagine them.  Ugh.

well I hope they are allowing the women who are TTC or PG NOT to do this! Honestly! Oh but then one pseudo pregnant woman will try to board with a grenade and even that will go away.

Paige, I'm with you. I'd rather have a pat-down, and I am pretty uncomfortable with pat-downs. Wink I blush like a tomato when they get to the booby areas...

I couldn't care less if someone saw images of my mostly-unidentifiable and pretty unspectacular body. I really do care about being exposed to radiation unnecessarily.

BF and I will probably be doing long-distance in grad school, so I will probably be flying a lot. I wonder if you sign up for that frequent traveler security-expediting thing I've seen if you still have to go through the scanners?

Heck, maybe we should have to fly naked

I believe that as long as you don't appear to enjoy it too much, the pat down is an option if you really don't want the scan.

    • Gold Top Dog

I think you are allowed to opt for the pat down. Honestly, if you're not comfortable, you have the right now to fly. You can drive, you can take a boat. I'm sure the terrorists can figure out a way around this though.

I don't know, not sure how worth it the scanners are when you factor in the cost.  I highly doubt we are going to see another 911 in our skies not because the security is tighter because most Americans aren't going to sit back this time around and see what the terrorists want.  They may be able to take a plan down but they aren't going to find it near as easy to purposely have the time to aim one into a specific building.  Flying is still far safer than driving a car, scanners or no scanners.

fwiw - we flew today from Orlando to NY (Kennedy) -- and I was expecting it to be gruesome (the've warned to get there 3 hours early).

Even in all the 9-11 backlash today was THE MOST SERIOUS security I've ever seen.  They actually have people just standing WATCHING (whicch is how a lot of suspicious stuff is easily caught).

b/c of my psoriasis I can't wear socks but neither can I touch the floor barefooted so I opted for the pat down  -- the woman was respectful and told me what she was doing (and it doesn't bother me anyway)

Now there WAS far more than the needed share of little megalomaniacs trying to make the lesser mortals feel intimidated.

It took us the WHOLE THREE HOURS to get thru everything and get to the plane.  Granted some of that was garbage cos I'm in the chair but man - NOT fast.
