Poor baby, sending some good vibes for Jamison.  Hoping it is nothing more than an abscess that can be cleaned up.

It does sound abcess or even cyst?

Gina:  are these common in beagles?  She wants to send it out to get biopsied.  What would cause something like that ???

    Deb W.

Am not Gina and she can know the beagle stuff --

BUT they are not uncommon, but I would most *certainly* send it to pathology.  It will relieve a lot of worry.

Sometimes lumps and bumps can start out as nothing -- and they can actually morph into something else *inside*.  Billy had a lipoma that he'd had for almost the whole 5 years we'd had him -- then came IMHA and WHO wants to do surgery on a dog that sick/  noooooooooooooo -- but we kept "watching" it and I think Dr. Bailey aspirated it 3-4 times ... always just fat.

But then the darned thing grew a little faster ... and it's density seemed to change and it just 'felt' different -- TIME TO REMOVE IT.

Now it was *just* a lipoma -- but Dr. Bailey really felt like it was getting ready to turn into something else.

I could have started out as a sebaceous cyst, or it could have been a lipoma with something else inside it and that grew and displaced the fat -- but the ONLY way you're gonna know anything at all for sure about it is to do pathology and then you'll know what steps to take next at least.

Beagles are an oily-coated breed --- and that can have something to do with things.

Shoot -- Kee Shu had something come up on her side last summer -- for ALL THE WORLD that danged thing looked like some sort of larvae had laid an egg in there -- GROSS ME OUT!  I took her straight to the vet -- he poked and prodded and then took a syringe needle and popped it and it was JUST a cyst.  Scared the crud out of me because what it looked like was NOT what it was.    Dang, for all the world I thot she had a little Alien growing in there -- tiny on one end, big on the other -- darned thing even felt ridged or segmented.  But nope - it was JUST a pimple.

You can never tell.  Prayers and Good thots Deb -- for sure!!

eeeek how scary!  Glad he made it through the surgery, and hopefully it will be something that is easily fixed.

Good thoughts for you and Jamison!

skin tags and fatty deposits are found in hounds...esp older or fluffy ones. Now I have no idea where on the body it is? Sometimes that is significant. I think biopsying it is wise. Did it not appear fluid filled at first or what? Usually they aspirate or stick a needle in there to check...did they do that? what if anything was found?

Abcesses typically come from some sort of puncture or injury...cat scratches, twig poking in...grass seeds like foxtails that work their way into the skin, some type of well...insect can also have larvae that bore in and cause issues. That is gross I know but I don't want to rule out ANYTHING...so all things to consider. There is one insect in particular I am thinking of but I cannot recall the name..

Cysts...well those come from some sort of issue with hair follicles if I recall, Ridgies get them bad..they recur and can cause major issues when along the spine...I think Ridgies get them along the ridge and affecteds are put down at birth or shortly thereafter. Bulldogs and some of the other mastiff breeds can get intradigital cysts...between the toes..they drain and require a lot of care and are something like auto immune in that they flare up from time to time thruout life.

DON't get freaked...this is all just things to consider and talk with the vet about, okay? Just things I have come across or read about in various dogs...

I've been right where you are and it's so scary.   ((Big Hugs))   Give your cuddle buddy some gentle kisses from me.

Belle wants to come and keep Jamison company while he recuperates.  Should I pack her bags?  Stick out tongue

Ok back from the Vets.  I made a nest of blankets on the floor to sleep off the anthesthia, but he looked at me as if to say "Mama  . . . . you know I don't DO floors", and jumped right up onto the couch.  I guess that's good.

The Vet was kind of evasive  . . . . she said it didn't look like a typical abcess, but that it might be an infected cyst, but then she said that mast cell tumors/cell mast tumors (I don't even remember what she actually called it) take many forms and often mask themselves as something else at first.  Do you guys buy this??  Do I need to find a new Vet??  She told me to relax until we get the results of the tests back - hopefully by Friday.

Anyway, thanks for everything you guys.  I don't know why I freak out so much over Jamison  . . . . I don't ever recall freaking out over Kate - I just kind of took everything in stride.

Oh man, Deb!  I can just imagine how your stomach went crashing to the floor seeing your baby you all covered in icky.    You & Jamison are in my heart & thoughts.  I don't know much about mast cells but one thing I DO know is that if it comes out of the body it will go for biopsy.  When I say 'it' I mean strange lumps bloody things that might have been encapsulated & burst.  Just remember to breath. I know you're scared for your boy.  Worrying won't do you any good right now.  Worry about things you can effect a change in.  ((HUGS))

My cat actually had something lay an egg in him one time. I forget exactly what they're called, Worbles, or something, but they usually migrate to the back of the neck where they grow for a while before exploding out of the host animal (usually squirrels) and... do whatever insectly disgusting thing it is they do, away. I assume dogs could get them do, I also don't recall seeing where Jamison's was.

Hoping you get good news from your vet, when they tell you what it is!

I'm so glad that surgery went well, & that Jamison is already back home resting comfortably.

I would wait & see what the histopath shows.  Your vet probably, honestly didn't know what it was, so she was just trying to prepare you for anything.  Don't stress over it, & wait to see what the expert thinks that it was.

Sending good vibes to you and jamieson!!!!!!  *huuugs*

    • Gold Top Dog

(((((((hugs))))))))) Clearly, Jamison, you did not read my decree, on FB, that no more than 3 sick dogs are allowed every year. We are officially DONE, so no more sickness or injuries allowed.
