    Milky Way in Cold Dust

The remarkable structures were resolved in new detail recently in the sky imaged in far infrared light by the European Space Agency (ESA)

Is it wrong that the first thing I thought when I read the title to this thread was... yummm new milky way candy bar and then spent several seconds trying to picture how the cold dust stuff would relate to the chocolate carmel nut goodness?

Aww, those made me feel suddenly very peaceful and simultaneously energized.  This universe really is an incredible place to be!  Off to bed now in hopes of drifting to those places in my sleep.  Very happy thoughts....zzzzz

If it is, then I am wrong too.  The first thing I thought of was a cold Milky Way bar, but then couldn;t think of how the dust came into play?

    Very cool pics.

If you've ever frozen chocolate you know that it gets that white dusty appearance....that's cold dust!

BTW...it's all CG, like Avatar. *cackles*

Add me to the list of candy bar people.  When I saw the pics, it took me a minute to figure out what they were.  I was thinking "this is soooo not a Milky Way"!

It's actually impossible for us, at the moment, to photograph the Milky Way Galaxy. They might be infared photos of a Galaxy, but it's not ours. Sorry. Doesn't make them less cool looking though.

You got me curious!  I looked at the source of these pics, particularly the first one, which is from NASA and has an explanation which says:

The intricate structures, shown above, were resolved in new detail recently in a wide region of the sky imaged in far infrared light by the European Space Agency's Planck satellite. The above image is a digital fusion of three infrared colors: two taken at high resolution by Planck, while the other is an older image taken by the now defunct IRAS satellite. At these colors, the sky is dominated by the faint glow of very cold gas within only 500 light years of Earth.

I like the infared one listed on Wiki for the Milky Way.  The middle pic says it's of Antares, which is a star within the Milky Way.  I know zilch about this stuff, though - just liked the pics. oooooh, preeeetty!

Yeah, after I posted that I discussed it with my roommate, who has also taken Astronomy, and she said, No to pictures of the ENTIRE galaxy, but you CAN take pictures of pieces of it. The images of galaxies and such with different filters are really cool. It's amazing what you miss with our vision. I've got to learn not to open mouth and insert foot, I guess. Embarrassed
