Do dogs know when we're happy?

Do you think if we smile at our dogs, they know what it means?  What about when we laugh, do you think they know its a sound we make because we're happy or think something is funny?

I don't know that they relate ;physical expressions to us being happy, sad, angry, etc.  I do think they "feel" our moods by the tone of voice we use and the vibes we give off.

Cousteau definitely knows that laughter is a good thing.  It's a good thing in some ways because we've been able to teach him some cute tricks, like rolling on his back and crossing his legs in the air.[:D]  Unfortunately he broke a sit-stay in an obedience competion and melted onto the floor in a really cute pose.  That made the audience laugh, so if he's bored in a sit stay now he'll melt just for a laugh.  Grrrrr!  [>:]

I'm just curious because I instinctively smile at Jimmy when I look at him, and I started wondering if he thinks I'm being friendly, or wonders why I make that strange face, LOL!

Kayla started wagging her tail every time I smiled.  If she got into something she wasnt supposed to I would give her that look and she would pin her ears back and look all sorry and then I would smile (because she was too cute when she did that) and she would perk up and wag her tail all happy.  They know.

I think they know. Pepper, our 5 year old dachshund is a clown. She likes to be silly and the more we laugh the more she runs around the house and gets even more exited.
And she also knows when I am sad. She'll snuggle up to me, sniff my tears and she has this worried look on her face.
