Cool - pet food at food banks

    NYT article: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/20/us/20pet.html?ref=us

Animal shelters around the country are being flooded with hungry pets, and to tackle the problem, charitable organizations are setting up pet food banks, with products offered within regular food pantries.

“One of our goals is to keep pets in their homes if we can,” said Jane Hoffman, president of the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, a nonprofit that works to find ways of limiting the number of animals in New York City that are euthanized. “It’s heartbreaking when an animal has to go to a shelter simply because its family doesn’t have the money to feed it.”

Cita, thanks so much for posting this.  I work with seniors, and believe me, when it comes down to feed the dog or themselves, many will feed the dog (that will be me in a few years, I'm sure).  People who administer charitable and emergency management programs need to come to grips with the fact that when you help the pets, you ARE helping the people.

Here is a local group that is always in need of funds and volunteers.  Our local Food Bank donates pet food to them when they can and people are becoming more aware that being able to keep a pet is vital for seniors.
