Grrr, the bank, can they do this?

I have lots of accounts but the account in question is my basic checking account which has my Visa debit/check card.  It expires 4/2010.  I'm going on a 10 day trip the first week of April, out of state, and will need to be making frequent purchases (gas, groceries, supplies, touristy crap, outlet mall shopping).  I've diligently been watching the mail for my new card.  It never came so I called the back last week and they said it should be coming, call back if I don't receive it by Wed.  Today is Friday, no card.  I called back and this time the teller said that they are switching to PNC (whatever that means, company merger or something?) so the new card issues are a little different.  She had to look into the time frame, called me back half hour later and said that PNC is issuing the cards the week of April 1.  I was mad but tried not to let it show, she's just the messenger!  So how can the expire my card and then wait a week after to issue me the new one?  I'm going to the credit union in a while to make a car payment and I'm tempted to just open a new account, but then I'd probably have to wait for them to issue a card too.

I know that with my credit card - it expires on the last day of the month of expiration.  Can you check with the bank to see if that's the case with your debit card?

    Deb W.

Thanks, I'll check.  If that's the case then it should be OK.

I agree with Deb but I'd definitely check with the bank.

I agree with the others, I am pretty sure that if it says it expires 4/2010 then when it is no longer 4/2010 i.e. May 1st, you should no longer be able to use your card.  I look at it the same way I would for my car inspection expiration.

    Have a great trip!

yep one of my cards has only month and year...but another has a month DAY and year so that might make a difference. The day on mine is the last day of the month tho...so you'd figure it amts to the same thing?

The day on all of mine has always been the last of the month, however, the card has typically arrived at the beginning of the month. One of the fun things this summer, though, I had the card linked to my ezpass expired. I didn't realize it was on this card, and didn't switch it over to the new one. I drove to Boston on I guess on the last day of the card. It went to hit for more money, since I used up all my funds. It couldn't get more money, so I went through the tolls in four states (based on the times and dates of my tickets) without paying tolls. I only got caught for it in two states though.

Yeah, mine expired in Jan but not til the end of the month.  We got our new cards around the 2nd week of the month.

You'll be fine, when they expire 4/2010, it means through the end of the month, even on debit cards.

Your other option is to walk into the bank branch and say you shredded the old one and ask for them to create the new one - almost every bank I've ever had makes a new one in the bank branch if necessary.  (But don't say you lost it, because they may want to change your accounts around on you - close old/open new.)  Just saying there's a back-up option if necesary, if your bank does that.

And man, my credit union account is THE BEST investment I have.  I pay nothing for statements, nothing for cashed checks ALL other services are far far cheaper than a regular bank.

I have had cards compromised and so went in and had them stopped AND had a new card sent to me and GOTTEN in in way less than 2 weeks.  It could seriously hedge your bets and you can always cancel it if you want.

And oh by the way -- I get interest on my account (way better than normal b/c it IS a credit union).  Typically I save hundreds of dollars in bank charges with MY credit union.  They're each different but mine is the best deal out there.

Becareful with this, they will more than likely close the card.  And yes, the bank can wait or not issue a card at their discresion.   Go with your credit union anyway!!  Get away from banks, they are rip offs!  Not all banks or CU have the ability to create "debit" cards at the branches it is an expense that not all banks invest in.

Also, one last thing - tell your bank you are traveling and where so they don't termporarily close your card with their fraud protection.  If they see to much activity out of your normal spending habits, places, amounts, etc and they can't reach you to verify they WILL shut the card down.  If you tell them your traveling they will make sure not to do that.

The expiration is a good thru date - check with the bank if they close on the 1st or last day of the month - don't assume.

I'm mainly concerned about it because this happened the last time my card expired.  It never came and I had to use DH's (who was not my DH at the time) until they could figure it out.  Hopefully it expires May 1 and not April 1.  Weird that the tellers on the phone wouldn't tell me that though.

My plan is to switch to the credit union, it's always just been a matter of getting there on time on a Saturday to get the paperwork done.  I also had another issue with "overdraft" charges so the straw is breaking the camel's back!

I'm so glad I haven't had antiquated banks.  Actually, right now I have USAA, so I don't have any branch to go to.  When my debit card expired last month, I called them because I hadn't gotten the replacement even though they sent it 5 weeks before it expired.  They made it that night, sent it Fed-ex to me the next morning, so I got it two days after I called them.  No charge.  Thank you, grandpa, for serving in the military - I love USAA!

You can usually open accounts with CU over the web, print the app and send it with a deposit check.  But.. you probably won't get a card in time for your trip like that.   Also, overdrafts are cheaper with CU and if you don't want to cover over drafts on your behalf and charge you a NSF fee tell them you want to be "opt out" of there overdraft protection plans.  It is usually best to get an overdraft line of credit then you do not get charged NSF fees, its a loan.
