    Dog "Personals" (Help!)

    Hi everybody!

I have a 2-years-old Black Labrador and I've been thinking recently on gettin' him a girlfriend. I've found this, at least here in Latinamerica (by the way sorry if my english is weird) is hard to accomplish here. There is not a "dog culture" and therefore dog parks and stuff like that is hard to find. I'm thinking in opening a free worldwide site where people with dogs (and other pets) can browse pets profiles and find the right partner for their pet in their local area in order to breed (I don't know if that's the right word) them and then sell the puppies or share them or give them away, etc. The main goal of the site is give owners the opportunity to easily see a lot of candidates (in a reasonable distance, through a "proximity search";) and then choose the right one.

I need a little help trying to gather all the info about the dog that should go into the "dog profile" next to a photo. I've thought of this so far:

    Name of the dog
    Breed
    Age
    "About me"

I think I'm missing some, it would be a great help if I can get some ideas.

I hope I've explained myself and again, sorry for my english

Since your site would promote the irresponsible breeding of unproven and un health tested dogs, it's very unlikely anyone HERE would have any interest in it.

The site won't take any position about that, that's for sure. Some questions about health and proven info could be added but eventually the owner of the dog will make the choice. Maybe you're right about noone helping me HERE, but I do hope not everybody see it the same way. Thanks for your reply anyway.

PD: I forgot. The site will have some articles and info about dogs in general

OK, let me reword that....your site will FACILITATE irresponsible breeding.

There are plenty of dogs around in the world who need homes. Breeding more is not a good idea.

It costs a lot to raise a litter of puppies, and if you think you can make money on it you can research it here and you'll see that you can't. It's a tremendous amount of work.

You'd do better to start a website helping people in Latin America to help find homes for all the dogs who are currently homeless, rather than adding to that problem by breeding more dogs. Take a look at Petfinder.com. Something like that for Latin America would do a real service to the dogs of all breeds who need someone!

Maybe what you really want is to start a forum like this in Spanish so folks who like dogs can find each other and get more organized and create dog parks and the like.

Just don't make breeding the focal point. Please don't add to the homeless dog situation.

    Welcome to the forum,
As Glenda stated, many people here would probably not be interested in such a site.
Breeding is a very delicate subject here and although you may not have many dogs available in your area we are heavily populated with dogs here in shelters, rescue and foster care because of irresponsible breeding.

I know myself I would not use such a site and I am a breeder. I research dogs by pedigrees, pictures and through my own evaluation as to if they meet my criteria for my girls.

    Good luck with your site

Thanks a lot for your replies, folks.

I think I understand what you say. My local area isn't populated with dogs and I thought it would be a good idea, especially since my owner perspective. I think you all guys are right about that. It's better to create a site that helps dealing with abandoned dogs and creating a "dog culture" instead of what I thought. I neved expected to make money out of the site, I said it was free on my first post but anyway... Thanks for making me see that, especially in a very gentle manner. Too bad I can say the same about glenmar. For people like him/her is that I hate posting in forums.

    Thanks again

I think I understand what you say.

Glad you found us johnny_bishop. The to breed or not to breed question is a difficult one, and one most of us have considered at some point or another. For me what it comes down to is breeding responsibly. The situation in the shelters in the US is grim, and the puppy mill situation is downright sickening. Many of us here are committed to not only responsible breeding, but also educating those who come here as well.

I understand that it can be difficult for someone new to dogs to find a suitable mate for their dogs, but that is because someone new to dogs has a LOT to learn about what it takes to be a responsible breeder. I think it would be VERY neat if you were to begin a site that focused on educating people about responsible breeding, and responsible puppy buying practices, and other general dog care information.

At any rate, to breed good dogs, and to do so responsibly takes a lot of knowlege and experience. For example, and for starters, you want your dogs to be proven - that they meet the breed standard, whether it be in the breed show ring, or to a working standard such as the Border Collie is judged by. You must also do the appropriate health and temperament tests (Ie testing for CHD, CEA, or whatever genetic conditions your breed is predisposed to). A responsible breeder also will keep their numbers down such that they can provide not only adequate but GOOD care and interaction with their dogs and puppies, and will find good homes for them all. They most often send their dogs out with spay/neuter contracts, and likely will take the dogs back if the new owner cannot keep it.

A responsible breeder will pour over pedigrees, knowing their dogs faults, and the faults of the dogs to which they plan to breed, and what characteristics certain line crosses tend to bring out. These are just a few things that barely tip the iceberg.

Good for you in being open, and for asking questions. I hope you'll stick around and learn some things that will be an added bonus for educating people when you get your informative site together.

Hi Johnny, welcome to idog. You sound like someone who really loves their dog and is interested in connecting with other dog lovers. If so, you are in the right place. I would not suggest you do a website to promote dog breeding however. It is not as simple as just finding another cute little dog and having a litter. If it is not done with the proper knowledge of genetics and health considerations you will only end up with a lot of puppies who will have many problems. They could be sickly, crippled, aggressive etc. These kind of dogs do not have happy lives and I'm sure that is not what you want. I hope you stick around this forum. You will learn a lot of things you will be able to pass on to the dog lovers in Latin America and hopfully that part of the world can avoid all the suffering that many dogs here are enduring.

My apologies if my post was too blunt.  My intention was certainly not to offend you.

Glenda, FWIW I didn't find your post in any way offensive.  It was to the point & just explained why no one HERE would be interested in that particular type of site. You said nothing at all critical of the OP - only that his idea was not a particularly good one.

    Supporting Glenda here.
Glad others were able to redirect into a more positive option.  Original thought = [:'(]

It is always better to try to explain why that should not be done in a nice way, because some people may just simply not know.  And some, as it seems johnny was, are receptive to learning and advice.  I am glad he didnt leave because it sounds like he changed his mind or is reconsidering.  That is a much better outcome than simply shooing someone IMO.

    Good for you Johnny!
Stick around and spend some time with us. There is plenty to learn about the dog community from all angles, rescue, fostering, showing, obedience and even breeding which isn't for the fait at heart..recently(past two weeks) I have heard of associates who's dogs went into labor, or so they thought way too early and they lost an entire litter of 5 puppies, just two days ago another went in for a C-section and the momma was lost from the C-section.

Glenmar can be kinda cranky.  Please forgive him/her.  The rest of us have learned to accept it.  [:D]  Do hang around.  You will learn a lot, as I did, and continue to do.  You may even find that Glenmar isn't so bad and even come to like him/her.
