    need opinions

So my husband lost his job today....big huge BUMMER. We've got a nice mortgage and four kids to care for, so we're a little stressed out at the moment.  I have been considering starting a PetLane business and wanted to see what you all thought of it.   If you've ever been to a Pampered Chef party or tupperware etc....it's the same premise, only I would be selling pet products (toys, treats, health care, food) in a party setting. They also have a monthly shipping option for the food for repeat business. It was interesting to me because I wanted to do something different (other than candles or jewelry) but I really don't know how something like this would be received. I asked on one of my parenting boards and then I realized that they weren't really my target audience.

I'm sorry to hear about this. I hope you find some way to make it work.

Honestly, I know lots of people do this type of stuff, and I have heard of people making some decent money. I think though, when I have heard this, it takes a while for them to get going. Anyway, the only time I make a purchase from any of these is if a portion of the proceeds are being donated. Otherwise, I can't justify paying that marked up price.

I dont know anything about this but just wanted to tell you how sorry I am for this news.  Huge vibes and hugs coming your way!

It looks pretty neat, would be up my alley, although I don't know how long it takes to build a good business up.  That is one type of party I'd want to attend :)  I am pet crazy.

I am sorry to hear about your husband's job! Good new job vibes for you :)

thanks everyone. I guess all I can do is try, right?  I don't think the prices are that marked up, when you compare to petsmart and those types of places. I don't know. I'm more depressed today than I was yesterday, so I should probably not think about it for today and just rest. It's one of those dreary days anyway!  Sad

I did something like that for a telephone company, i dont even know if they exist anymore! anyways it was difficult, but I think thats because of the area is was in ( telecommunications) and the fact that I was so young. I hated calling people & trying to 'sell' them. But selling doggie stuff might be more fun, granted I might be my own biggest customer!! LMAO!!

Let us know how it goes, I'll stick to 'making' things for my etsy site for now.  I kinda stay away from things that have an initial investment like that.

send me the link to your etsy...I used to sew and had an online business selling my wares, but I got so burned out and closed down shop.  This may sound crazy, but it's been a dream of mine for about 3 years to invent a good quality dog food. (kibble) I know there are lots of choices out there right now, but it seems like I like different things about different foods, and would love to come up with my own. Unfortunately, I know nothing about going about doing that, so I just think about it all the time!

I haven't made things for awhile now due to how busy I've been and now having Zoey. but I've got some doggie stuff on there, love making things for pups!!

I think the dog kibble idea is great. ive been modifying out doggie kibble or supplementing it. adding peas stuff like that, to make it a little more wholesome. I really like that one place that makes a raw diet but it's dehydrated. I think thats an excellent idea.

I just wish I knew how to go about it.  I add stuff to my dog's kibble right now...like tonight she got some boiled chicken, brown rice and a few green beans mixed in with about 1/2 cup of kibble.   I don't like that dehydrated stuff either. I am not quite up for doing raw for her just yet, but not 100% committed to homecooking for her. Literally every time I'm feeding her though, I think "Man, I'd sure love to develop the perfect dog food". I know right where to come for input and feedback too!

I liked your stuff....I made some collars a while back, but didn't love the design, and then never pursued it further. I also made a dog bed, but that needed tweaking as well. I love making dog stuff...I just don't seem to have time right now. In our old house, I had an entire sewing workshop set up with all my machines, big shelving units for fabrics and notions, and a giant cutting board.  Here if I want to sew, I have to drag everything out of the storage and put my machines on the dining room table, and then clean it all up so we can eat.  It just takes the joy out of it for me!

Just a thought... you could make up little containers of stuff to add to dog food, such as beans, boiled chicken, ect. Then market it to locally owned pet stores who already sell raw food. Or here is another idea, for $$ / week, you drop off premade custom dog food to your clients every couple of days.

But I do like the idea of the dog product party. :) Especially if it would allow me to meet other dog lovers and perhaps new doggie friends for my girls. Big Smile
